Morning, All, I'll begin by offering an apology to our newbie, Scott B.. Whist my warning about your white pump was quite valid, and definitely warranted, I went over the line, possibly, by calling into question your honesty, Sir. For that, I most humbly apologize. Sometimes, my zeal for safety over rides my sense of courtesy, and this was one of those times. I do believe that you should end the auction with the white pump, due to huge concerns for safety, or at least add a warning NOT to use that pump for any reason whatsoever. But, that is up to you. Again, I am sorry I went too far in some of my comments, and I regret edging into personal territory. As to my friend, @geeves , I well remember the song about which I think you may be referring: "Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream.... make him the cutest that I've ever seen......" That the one? Here's a fun reminder of back when I was a kid, and LOVED this song, and the harmonies that these Gals offered: Ahhhh, those were the days!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
I have seen this several times as I browse E-Bay for gear. One that suck out and got a comment from me was a Whisperlite 600 paired with a slightly melted all red Dragonfly pump. The seller promptly responded with a thanks, and changed the item description to reflect the mistake, and inserted the proper pump. I have no problem pointing out safe gear concerns to others. KM
Ross, butthead, and all, Ross, you make an excellent point, however, in this case, he specifically stated that he had tested this stove with this pump. "....I did fire it up and it does work despite there being a crack in the pump...." Seems pretty cut and dried, to me. In any case, I stand by my warning, and also my apology, and we'll see how it all turns out. Thanks, again, Gents, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
I don't think it's safe but I do suspect it might almost work. If the pin holds the disc and rubber quite firmly against the end of the pump tube air can be forced past it. The other way fuel back pressure will push the disc against the end face making a seal - God willing. Safe it definitely isn't but in an emergency it might stop you dying of thirst - bearing in mind snow doesn't burn. In any other situation best to avoid it!
Hello Gents, One would not wish to be proven wrong when one is in the back of beyond, with a any ball of fire greedily consuming all in its path. Whether or not it could possibly work is moot point. It is trumped by whether it could catastrophically fail when needed most. It's a "Glass-half-full" situation, and in this case, the glass is half empty. On that basis, I'd have to completely exonerate the Good Doctor in his assessment of the situation. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck..... Just my tuppence ha'penny. Best regards, Mike.
Good evening stovies ! @Doc Mark, I think @geeves was refering to "Enter Sandman", a song from Metallica So I was.
This discussion has as much to do with how we meet our new members. Some are deleted by the mods before they ever see our forum. Some get past that first line of defense and end up posting SPAM. I understand they are dealt with swiftly (I have not seen one). Next is a real person. This is a bit more delicate than the others. They got past the mods and are now in the general population. 1) Some are simply cautious newbees. They post PMs or lurk and never post anything. 2) Some come and go as frequently as the new years rolls around, or even less. 3) Some are great stovies that are jumping in with the symptoms of the pox, cured by flame. And end up with post counts like Doc. 4) Some are people wishing to present themselves as something other than they really are. We have seen them come and go, some not going as quickly as some members wish they did. I think as a group we are tolerant. But when someone presents one thing as they say another, we do tend to put them in the 4th category. A warning is better to have been incorrect than to have been correct and ignored. I did contact THAT person, and he will have nothing more to do with us any more. At least that is what he said. Personally, I am private. I am not on Facebook. I do not say all there is to say about me. But, I do not portray the parts I do show as other than what I am. Just not all of what I am. It's not relevant. You know where I stand on a few controversial subjects, but I do not shout it from the roof or bring it up every time there is a slip in the armor. Ken in NC Now I have used up my months worth of words.
No argument with any of that and for sure something like that should not be openly sold. Just from an engineering point of view I am still curious whether it would actually work. Sometimes if you are stuck up $heet creek a bodge like that might get you out of trouble. If you recognise the dangers and can mitigate them sufficiently it might be worth trying - once or twice as necessary. I should admit I have nothing MSR so no first hand experience but I really don't like plastic pumps at all - but come to that I think the Primus version with the pressed in NRV end deserves no roses either.
Here's the 'sandman' song I thought of; "sandman swings the lantern..." Shall I say that I am a Judith Durham fan?
Judith Durham..... I had the pleasure of meeting her in person some years ago, when The Seekers did their 25th Anniversary Tour. Lovely lady, the voice was stunning!!! I'm a fan too!!! Best regards, Mike.
I'm not MSR knowledgeable. Can anyone explain why this would fetch $170? The cracked pump is disclosed in the first description line so the buyer probably has a spare on hand to use. Is the stove itself a rare model?
There is a chance this is a transition stove in the range of 9A to G. If so, it is an uncommon assembly of parts by MSR as the production line changed the parts for new versions. Not one stove model or the other. The yellow pump is an early version of the yellow pump. The MSR bottle is an early bottle. Otherwise, it may be a cobbled together accumulation of parts. Parts cleaned and assembled from parts found in a box. I was saved by a high bid.
