The graphite is probably fine, it ages very well. Any spare rubber bits in the pump tube like gaskets or pips will be rock hard and unusable though.
I think it's an add-on from a previous owner. I've not seen one on any other M-1942. Take it out and see how things work without it.
I think an electrolysis bath could do wonders for that stove. From the looks of most of the parts you could set up a five-gallon bucket rig and...
Pictures of one of the stoves would certainly help.
Nice job getting that stove back to working condition.
@Daryl The Gate is looking good. Please start a separate thread for you work on it. It deserves its own space.
Patience, penetrating oil (NOT WD40) and heat. The most important of these is patience.
Near $400 USD I can buy a whole lot of Coleman 500s for that.

Given that hundreds of thousands of brass stoves have been built over the last 150 years using ordinary soft lead solder I think there is a good...
High temp paint isn't needed for the case. The cases just don't get very hot (unless you've done something very wrong). In the US I use either...
@Onfire Do not use an adjustable wrench and the silcone will make the problem worse. That nut is brass and your best bet is to use the proper...
Gun oil is not a penetrating oil and will not help you here. Mix equal amounts of acetone and automatic transmission fluid (what kind doesn't...
Apply a good penetrating oil (not WD 40) around the nut at the top of the pump tube. Let it sit for a day then apply more, repeat for a few days....
Probably orange. It appears the WD may have bought up commercial stock to fill wartime needs, especially after the massive loss of equipment in...
Hurlocks in the desert? Doubtful as the timelines don't overlap. Earliest dates I've seen on any Hurlock is 1944 and things were well over in...
