Plastic is salt proof, a box could be made from Perspex , the joints are welded using ether in a cold process. This is easy to do. Ether is available at chemist shops. Or you could make one from marine grade stainless steel, fold and tig weld. This will need more skills and equipment. This type of thing is done by sink makers all the time. Just my thoughts on it.
