making leathers

Again I am asking help, as a novice at fettling.
I have just bought another old stove, and the leather on the pump has disintegrated. Has anybody ever tried making leather plungers for the pump?
Are old shoes good enough?
How do you cut the leather?
Is everybody as impatient as me to get the things going?
By the way, the advice I have received from this site has so far has resulted in a 100% success rate!
