Response to langdale horseshoe

It would be interesting to hear from Ross or others who have a lot of experience hiking both in Britain and the States. The western mountain forests in contrast to the moors and fells, etc. A lot of open ground in Britain. Are there heavily forested mountains in Britain that are like unto some in the US west?
It reminds me; when Debbie and I drove from Durham to Cumbria a year ago over the Pennines on a beautiful route recommended by Ross, I saw extensive tree stands, obviously planted. They were curiously familiar at a distance... could it be? Yes, they were Douglas firs, the quintessential tree of the western Cascades and Rockies, and incidentally the best lumber tree in the world.
