Is that us, or our gear?
By and large, at 56 I do more car camping than backpacking these days, but have not abandoned the latter, by any means. But our favorite camping method is to use Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management-type campgrounds rather than National Park or State Park grounds. The former are more rustic and remote, generally speaking. Many Nat'l Park campgrounds are now too civilized, and in Washington State, the State Park campgrounds are way too fancy with too many amenities, including the televisions in the RVs.
My dad and his dad quit camping when their kids were grown. I on the other hand have returned to it with a vengeance after a hiatus of only a few years. The stove collecting has only intensified it.
I have no interest in trailering, though my dad did it (mostly in connection with duck hunting) for years and a couple of my brothers do. I think it is the retro spirit. As you say, to one degree or another, all of us are throwbacks to an earlier era of outdoor adventure.
But I'm eclectic: wool pants but polypro underwear; both fleece and wool sweaters. No propane or butane; no, nay, never!
