All of the above is a good remedy to your problem.

An alternative way is to visit your local hardware store's plumbing section and get graphite packing that comes in twine form, or spaghetti form. Wrap it around the spindle a couple three times and tighten the nut. A package will set you back by $2.50, but will last you a very long time.

You could also try the valve sealing compounds that come in a can or a tube. These compounds are usually rated at 500F and 10,000 psi. Rub an adequate amount to the thread and tighten.

These compounds work equally well in place of the heat proof washers between the riser and the burner of the classic brass kero stoves.
