Response to Heat Diffuser for backpacking stoves

There is a heat dispersion plate that's often sold with "Outback Ovens", called a "Scorch Buster". They have them at CampMor (www.campmor.com) for $12.99. Cooking stores sometimes carry heat diffusers, but they're likely to be heavier and more expensive. There's also the chem. lab alternative: wire gauze with a ceramic center; 5" square for $1.89 at Auspex Scientific (www.auspexscientific.com & search for "wire gauze"). I'm not sure how well any of these work; I usually don't simmer food in the outdoors (perhaps I should). In any case, I think I'd try the "tin can lid" heat diffuser suggested by Spiritburner before shelling out money on something that may not work much better.
Happy cooking.
