Hi I have a used optimus one burner stove it is new looks to never been used. It did not have any instructions with it. It looks like the Optimus 111b inside but it uses three different fuels and has three different sleeves that slide inside the burner to change the air flow and two different jets for the different fuels to use. I am afread to use it because I don't know how it is set up for use I am looking for some kind of instructions on use and what sleeves and jets go with what fuel hope someone can help thanks

Instructions

Sounds like an Optimus Hiker 111T T for triple fuel.
I've got one of these I'll see if I've got the instructions somewhere. I can probably scan them in and e-mail them to you. I don't know anything about the restricters and spare nipples I never used anything in mine but paraffin.

More on instructions /

May 10 2003, 1:18 PM

I've got the instructions Ok, but they're on a single sheet which is bigger than my scanner can handle.

I can probably get them done for you but piecing them together from multiple scans would take to long right now. (I'm in the middle of exams)

Proceed with caution.

I can tell you that the nipple to use paraffin or petrol SHOULD be the one thats fitted. for paraffin(kerosene) you don't need either of the restrictors. I'd be inclined to test it with paraffin. (Safer)

I can tell you what the instructions say:

Filling of Fuel:
Fill max 0.3 litre (10fl oz)

Will's Note: about 2/3 to 3/4 full?

When changing fuels the tank should be emptied first.

Preheating:
Turn the regulating key to the right as far as possible. Give the pump approx five strokes to build up pressure in the tank. Put some Optimus burning paste in the cup (gasoline or alcohol may be used - do not spill)

NB Will's note use alcohol! tsp full AND mine needs about 9 or 10 strokes.

Light the paste.

Lighting:
When the paste is almost burnt out. Turn the regulating key to the left, whereby the outcoming gas ignites.

NB Will's note Allegedly! I light the vapour above the burner with a lighter or match. Some time it lights below the burner and "gargles" if it does this turn it off and back on quickly, and light it above the burner.
The "underburning" can do serious damage. Mine burns with a quiet hiss. Underburning is quite noisy.

The Stuffing Box:
If a small flame appears at the stuffing box (on the burner were the regulating key fits on) Use the enclosed key to turn to the right. Relight.
Repeat if necesary.

The alcohol nipple must not be used for kerosenne (paraffin) or gasoline.

Will's Note:
These instructions are provided without any warranty whatsoever!
If you have an accident it's your own fault! Therfore proceed with caution. Hopefully someone will double check these instructions and point out any errors.

please note

My Optimus is a 111T
It came (new)about 20 years ago with one alcohol nipple and two sleeve restrictors:

One sleeve for alcohol.
One for petrol.

If this seems different from what you have then perhaps you should wait before rushing out to burn fuel.

sorry

May 10 2003, 2:01 PM

Sorry guys I made a mistake the optimus I have has two jets and two sleeves the way it is set up when I got it no sleeves in the burner but one jet in in place how do I tell the jets apart what jet goes with what fuel. As good as I can tell one of the jets holes is larger than the other if that is any help haha. One of the sleeves is a little longer than the other the longest one has the air hole at the bottem and the shorter sleeve has the air hole about an half inch from the bottom

5213 Alcohol Restrictor *MUST be fitted!
5163 Gasoline Restrictor *Must be fitted!

according to instructions using fuels other than paraffin the restrictors must be fitted.

I mentioned the stuffing box its:
2194 Stuffing Box

From the instructions I have it looks like you can use either nipple for use with Alcohol but suggests that for Alcohol you should change the nipple as well.

Instructions warn strongly against using the Alcohol nipple with other fuels.

I'll check them both and get back to you.

Nipples (Jets) Restrictors.

May 10 2003, 3:14 PM

My gasoline/petrol restrictor 5163 is a bit longer say 8mm or 5/16" longer than the alcohol restrictor 5213.

I heard the restrictors don't last too long, maybe another reason to use paraffin?

The nipples:

The alcohol nipple the hole is slightly flared or countersunk when viewed from the top. The other nipple has just a fine hole. The alcohol nipple is slightly bigger. Hold both side by side up to a light viewing through the bottom and the difference should be easily apparent.

As I said before the petrol/paraffin nipple should be the one already fitted when the stove is new.

This is based on looking at the components I have here.
I take even less responsibility than Microsoft's End User License Agreement!

Mind I'm not trying to put you off but it's your responsibility to make sure that you don't set light to yourself, pets, relatives, property or foreign countries. I hope this stove gives you many years of good service. My fishing pal reckoned we'd made something like 60 gallons of tea on mine!

No such thing as a dumb question / Instructions

May 12 2003, 9:26 AM

The dumb thing is not asking questions:

Instructions for lighting your Optimus Hiker are in my post this thread titled More on instructions.

Perhaps a dumb name for that post

The instructions are taken direct from my optimus instructions sheet.

Early 111 T instruction

May 12 2003, 11:11 AM

I have one huge file at http://www.home.no/dsk/111T2.pdf (3MB)

This 111 T was from before the restrictors was fully developed, and later partno. indicates a new alcohol-restrictor, and this alcohol restrictor works for some gas qualities.

My experince tells me; This one is made for kerosene, and may be used with other fuels. I have tested whitegas just using it with the same niple as for ker, and no restrictor. It works OK, but preheating with paste ar alcohol causes less soot.  You should not use the alcohol nipple to other fuels!

Good luck

Dag S
