| PRIMUS No2 ?????July 1 2003 at 1:17 AM | rik |
| Hello all, I have been given a Primus No2 stove, at least I think it is, as the writing on top of the stove is well worn. It is date stamped 1912 (B) and is fitted with a silent burner. However it is a BIG stove, the tank is about twice the size of my No5,,,,any ideas on this one???

Big bugger but goes well in the collection.

The Primus No. 2 was the "intermediate" size domestic/commercial stove (the No. 3 was bigger again). Your stove originally had a roarer burner. The silent burner equivalent was the No. 6.
So the model numbers for fixed leg domestic stoves went (in ascending order of size) like this:
No. 30 (roarer burner # 4127; 1 pint )
No. 0 (roarer burner # 4127; 1 1/2 pints)
No. 1jr (roarer burner # 4127; 2 1/4 pints)
No. 1sr (roarer burner # 4128; 2 1/8 pints)
No. 1 (roarer burner # 4128; 2 1/3 pints)
No. 2 (roarer burner # 4129; 4 1/4 pints)
No. 3 (roarer burner # 4131; 7 pints)
No. 34 (silent burner # R132; 1 pint )
No. 4 (silent burner # 4125; 1 1/2 pints)
No. 5jr (silent burner # 4125; 2 1/4 pints)
No. 5sr (silent burner # 4138; 2 1/4 pints)
No. 5 (silent burner # 4138; 2 1/4 pints)
No. 6 (silent burner # 4142; 4 1/4 pints)
No. 7 (silent burner # 4142; 7 pints)
In later (post-WW II) catalogues, the No. 7 was re-designated as No. 8. The tank capacity of the Nos. 1 and 5 senior was later reduced to 2 1/8 pints. The capacity of the Nos. 1 and 5 was reduced from 2 1/3 to 2 1/4 pints.
Moreover, the senior models were constructed with lighter gauge brass tanks and lacked the sunken filling hole (patented c. 1920) which appeared on the Nos. 1 & 5 from that time. For more information, see the c. 1920 catalogue which is posted on this site. |

Thank you for the information Peter. The light brass would account for the fading in the tank stamping. Its a big old stove, and I will look out for a roarer burner to fit.

Albert, your right,,,,they are big, but I was amazed when I put in some fuel and pre heated it, it came to life first time (after all its 91 years old). It came with a lot of stuff from a clearance sale which included the no.2, a valor 55, an aladdin 21c and 23 bases, a tilley heater base and a complete tilley heater (with asbestos mantle!). I only bought it all for the complete tilley, but having said that the no.2 has a lot of appeal so it will stay (the rest bar the tilley heater will be on ebay or broken down for spares).
All the best

Sounds like you went to an auction and got some good gear.
I oftern get lots like this with the intension of selling most of it or all of it. When I get it working I then don't want to part with it. This would be why I have so many .
