Rex stove

I found this Swedish stove on a market in Denmark yesterday – 20 $.
I have some questions, can anybody help me ?
How old do you think the stove is, is it common?
How did the missing burner plate and tank lid look?
Was it designed for petrol, or kerosene – if the last is the case where was the pump fitted?
Have anybody seen a shutoff valve like the one on the bottom of this stove?
If anybody have or have seen a similar stove please let me know, I would like a picture.

Cheers
Jan Rømsgaard

pumpless

I rhink this is definetly a petrolburner, since it's pumpless. It prwessurises itself, rather like a giant SVEA.

It's a pretty unusual design. I'd quess that it was quiet early, from the time when stove manufacturars were coming up with elabourat ideas about how to beat each other.

I certainly think it is early & rare. I have some info on a paraffin Rex stove but it has a different tank although the legs look very similar as does the burner although it has a control knob. The pump is not visible on the ad. I also have a very early ad (1890's) for a similar stove sold by Condrup & Moeller with the same contol mechanism under the tank. This also used paraffin & had no pump - I can't lay my hands on it at the moment but will look later. It did not mention a brand but the ad is curious - Condrup & Moeller were the main agents in the UK for Primus & this ad makes no name of the Primus name. The stove does not appear to be a Primus.

More info

Hi Jan,
I'm just adding some new pictures to the collectors gallery for the relaunch this weekend. I have had the same model submitted by Johan Everitt in Sweden. The tank lid bears the makers name - AB Mekanikus Stockholm.

more info - translation required

September 11 2003, 12:01 AM

I just found some info on Blowlamps Unlimited that C.R. Nyberg, the pressure blowlamp inventor, that was also behind the Svea brand, worked for AB Mekanikus before setting up on his own!

One of Nybergs very early stoves was the Victoria. I have a 1894 document in Swedish that compares the REX to the Victoria.
The Rex burner shown is similar to the Mekanikus Rex but is adjustable - the same as the burner I mentioned in my first reply.
Interestly the picture I refer to in that reply bears the name Axel E. Malmstom, Stockholm (maker or dealer?) - this name also appears on the Nyberg document.
I'd assumed that the Rex stove mentioned in the Nyberg document was a Nyberg brand & the comparison was between old & new models.
I think what we have here is some interesting jigsaw pieces. I will post the document in due course. Any volunteers to translate it (only a couple of paragraphs) so that we can hopefully make progress with this jigsaw?

Hi Ross

I will give my Swedish a chance and try to do the translation. Please mail the paragraphs to me.

Hi Jan,
I found another document on the same comparison with more detail so I have sent that as well, along with the Malmstrom Rex brochure as I'm sure they will be of interest.
Cheers,
Ross

wickless, pumpless paraffin stove - more info

I found it! It isn't the Rex but it's the same concept & I believe from the same era. This trade ad dates from October 1895. If anyone has any further info let us know.

Rex in the USA

The stove on this advert looks very similar - maybe imported rather than US made?
