Phoebus 625 Jet 'W' ?

September 30 2003 at 7:02 PM
Jan M.

Hi there,

rifling through my Phoebus spares I noticed one jet that was marked "W", instead of "G" (Petrol) or "E" (Kero). The top surface isn't smooth as usual but slightly rippled. The hole appears smaller in diameter.
Never seen that before.

Any ideas?

Thanks and Blue skies.

Re: Phoebus 625 Jet 'W' ?

Hi.

It's possible that some one misstyped a "W" for an "M" for multifuel.

Unless the "W" is a foriegn languages name for alcohol, however I doubt it.

Phoebus Mystery Jet

It's either gas or kerosene, nothing else. I have a number of Phoebus jets for both 625's & 725's (one in the same). I also have an "F" jet. There is also a "P" jet for kerosene. Since Phoebus is no longer in business, there is no way to verify their lettering system unless one can find an ex-Phoebus machinist. My suggestion is to experiment with both fuels for efficiency & performance and document the results. Whichever one works best is what you should be using. Please let us know what you find out.

Good Luck

I'll give it a try - Kero first, then Petrol.
I might even give it a shot with Meth...
Just kidding!

Trying the 'W'

October 5 2003, 3:44 PM

Tried the aforementioned 'W'-jet on both Phoebus 625s:

_Petrol:_ worked, but totally uneven flame and strange noise.
_Kerosene:_ lit, but immediate underburning that wasn't controllable.

Checked the jet and found the hole to be very irregular, probably from the way it was made. All other jets appear to be made on a lathe, whereas this one looks rather rough-cut.

My guessing is that it is a Petrol-jet.

As I don't have any means of correcting the holes' diameter (i.e. very, very small drill), I'll just chuck it in the very back of my spares-box and hope I'll never need it.

Blue skies.

a petrol jet ( as in coleman fuel and Shellite) will have a larger hole than Kerosene.

this i thought, but...

Albert,
yep, I initially thought that myself, a smaller hole indicating a kero-jet.
Can't really say I thought about it too much before the trial on both fuels, though.

The test-result showed petrol to burn, even though with difficulties, and kero not to do anything but smoke, so I guessed it to be petrol.

The irregular hole seems a result of the final treatment of the jets' top surface.
It appears to have been 'smoothed' with something like a wirebrush - a fairly coarse one at that. Some material has been moved towards the already existing jets' opening and thus changed its' shape.
Irregular and smaller now.

Blue skies.

Tip Cleaners

Jan a good indication of the hole size is got from tip cleaners for oxy and accetaline. Than you would want a chart to convert it.

Thanks for your jet update

I just returned from a Route 66 trip across New Mexico & Arizona or I would have responded earlier. Met many Brits wanting to immigrate to this part of the world. Mostly from the London area. All I can say is welcome.
