If you are working to a small budget and want to use a stove you already have, why not consider the burner from your Trangia. It would be summat & nowt of a job to make up a suitable gimballed receptacle to hold it and a pan or kettle. Refilling it would be easy enough - just take it out of the stove arrangement and fill it somewhere where spills don't matter so much and/or it's more comfortable than standing over the stove. Alternatively, have a spare fuelled-up & ready to go then take out the empty one and replace it with the full one. Just like that!
Whatever stove setup you ultimately end up with, except gas, you will find one of these very useful,if not invaluable, for filling it

They only have the 0.5L one on this site but you can get 1L ones too. I use a 1L for paraffin & a 0.5L for spirit - just the job. |

| going out tomorrow | April 8 2004, 4:39 PM |
Wer going to go out fishing on the boat (called Naron by the way) tomorrow morning.
I'll pribably take my Trangia and use it outside on the deck. Hopefully the weather won't be too bad and fishing will be good.
Although we are experiencing problems allredy. The fishfinder reckons that the water is 1 ft deep and the bottom is perfectly flat...i think ther's something wrong with it... |

| gimbals | April 8 2004, 7:21 PM |
Various gimballed marine stove setups were discussed on this forum at the end of last year (search for "gimbal"), but the included photos are no longer available. Ross, are these photos good candidates for the "Paraffinalia" section?
I had included a gimbal photo with a Primus #5. A gimbal like that would work for any similar-sized stove with soldered-on pot supports.

| Yep, kerosene really does work | April 8 2004, 9:37 PM |
Kerosene surely does work as a diesel replacement (the engine oil is, I believe, primarily to add lubricity, which the additives in diesel #2 provide, but kerosene lacks. The oil would also add a little "oomph" and increase combustion temperatures, as kero is less energetic than diesel (by about 10% IIRC)).
I'd have to be pretty desparate to want to run it in my old MB diesel, but then again I'd never be stuck at sea if I was out of fuel... |

I agree 100%, Sigivald. It's stopgap, something to commit to deep memory only to be dredged up when you still a good way out and fast running out of diesel.
The 'red' diesel for marine & industrial use in UK is a lot cheaper than a lot of the paraffin on the market too.

| Gimbals & Marinisation | April 9 2004, 12:34 AM |
I don't know if it was in that thread or not, but someone ( I think it may have been Sven)posted a picture, several months ago, of a marinisation job that he'd seen somwhere. It had a great big flared top to it around the pan ring - I seem to remember saying I wouldn't entertain it in a boat of mine. Ring any bells,Sven?

| Have you tried | April 9 2004, 7:21 PM |
the stuga cabana site listed in the links section
http://www.hytta.de/ and click on the picture of brass primus type stoves.
They are selling brand new spiritus kochers - alcohol stoves for between 64 and 105 euros, about £40 - £60. I know they ship to the UK as I have dealt with them in the past, and they speak much better english than my German

| The Optimus 155 has been made with it | April 13 2004, 1:10 PM |
When the "old" silent burner was replased the torch was removed.
The reason may be the type of solder, and prolonged preheat time on the C-burner.

| Boat Stove again | April 13 2004, 6:02 PM |
Paraffinalia - the very place to look!
Something along the lines of the Primus Stove Shelter 1154 with the bail removed and a couple of bolts at the bail fittings, constructed from a paint tin or similar; size to suit stove, would provide a cheap, neat, gimballed, saveall stove apparatus for Adi |

I have a Primus 536, it is identical to the Optimus 535.
So now there is 2 choices for the same stove.
