The Ledmark set that 111t is referring to is a nice "starter" set if you like. It's very reasonably priced ($20.00). If you wanted to try this class of stove, the Ledmark is very little investment, but it should give you a good idea if this class of stove is one that will work well for you. A full Trangia set is pretty pricey, particularly for an alcohol stove. A note on the Ledmark: The kettle doesn't come with the set, and if you do get the kettle, it doesn't sit in the windscreen (unless you add some tent stakes or something). 111t did a little write up of it. Hopefully he won't mind if I share the write up since it's posted publicly: Ledmark Alcohol Cookset Review by 111t. It's a pretty good review. There are also some posts about the Ledmark set here on CCS. Generally the Ledmark set gets good reviews although it's clearly not of the same quality of a genuine Trangia. General CCS Post on Ledmark CCS Post on How to Mod the Ledmark for Kettle Use HJ
Well, I've ordered a 25-5 UL from campsaver.com; they had it 15% off and so I bought it new (with kettle, too) for $80.95. Better price than I'd seen other places..... So finally a Trangia after 10 1/2 years here. 8)
Givens: the Trangia set is made of better material. The stove has a simmer ring. The stove's cap is better suited for extinguishing the flame. That being said, I prefer the Ledmark's windscreen. If only they had designed a kettle for this set.
It's arrived. It is a very nice set. It's nice to have one in hand after many years seeing pix of the thing here at CCS. The frying pan will fit two steaks at a time better than the Sigg.... I'll fire it up soon, I believe.
Just remember to put something in to protect the teflon finish. I have a pot holder and a trangia seive thingy in mine, and a plastic bag for the fry pan. Otherwise, they scratch easy.
Hi Hikin_jim!! Don't mean to Hijack the thread. I would pay $20 apiece for the camping gaz gt106 pierced canister adapters chicken thief used to sell... still no word from him?? He could have a monopoly/profitable business on these adapters! Also want to convert my clip on 270/470 camping gaz appliances to screw on. I hope I'm not offending or jacking this thread!!! Just rgistered here and unfamiliar with this forum software. Thanks for patience and understanding!! Live long and prosper!! Mel
Welcome aboard the Ship of Pyros(Tm), Melvin. I used a GT106 for ages, until the canisters became effectively unobtainable. Then I stuck a 123 in the pot set and revitalized them for the 21st century
Welcome. If you're wanting to refill GT106 Globetrotter carts then check out this thread. IIRC, all the connectors Gary used are contained in this ebay item; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GELERT-MU...amping_CookingSupplies_ET&hash=item23149c8a5e Hopefully Gary will confirm or correct this in due course.
Ian yes that's the right type, although I used this version. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Interchan...amping_CookingSupplies_ET&hash=item1c1b14e3bc
Mine has the alu pots, but a Teflon fry pan/lid. There is a learning curve on uses other than boiling... Practice is indicated! I stuck my Nova burner in, Best kit ever! Mite heavy, tho...
One of the odd things about the Trangia kit is that neither the instruction booklet, the box, or anything else, actually tells you how to fill and use the burner. I've used the Swedish military kit, so I do have the general idea. The instructions have all sorts of stuff about setup, but as to fueling and lighting say only to "not overfill, 2/3 full is sufficient". So, what is actually the best technique for filling and lighting? I assume it's pour some alcohol into the central reservoir, say 2/3 or 3/4, wait a few seconds for some absorption, and then put a match to the liquid alcohol in the center.....
Evidently yours didn't come with the requisite hypodermic arrangement. You MUST fill each separate burner hole with a 1/3 squeeze of alkyhol before use. I'm surprised that wasn't readily apparent Ed. Best, Bob
No, no, no, you soak it overnight in a solution of Everclear and gin. In the morning (when you sober up), it'll light right up. Ed, I have a little measuring cup of about 30cc capacity. I have a flip top bottle that I carry alcohol in. I measure out my alcohol knowing that about 22cc will boil 2 cups in Trangia 27. I then let it sit for only a second or two in temperate weather (above 40F/5C), and light it with my lighter. Pretty straightforward. With a Trangia of course, you can store alcohol in the burner while in transit, assuming of course the O ring in the lid is intact. In that case, you'd just unscrew the cap, light, and cook. HJ
And they call it a simple stove! 8) It is interesting though, that they say nothing at all to the tyro buyer that tells him how to fuel and light the stove properly, however simple it may be. After all, I have the benefit of ten years here; I know about the syringe routine!
I guess its sort of like the price tag on Minnie Pearl's hat, they just assume, and you know about that, I assume (or is that presume?). I'd never given it any thought but have read enough on here to roughly figure burn times for particular amounts of water....or whatever is being warmed/cooked. Slosh some in and then add a little for good measure. Bob
50Ml airline nip bottles are just the right size for a 'from empty' refill. I apply the rule of thumb, fill burner until you have a thumb thick space between liquid and rim. Once you get the swing of the thing you'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier. Starting with a full burner and the 50ml bottle should give you a solid gourmet cook up (work that simmer ring!) and 3 or 4 cups of coffee. Frying can be a knack, the pan does not heat evenly, esp if the simmer ring is applied, but it does mean you can fry up bacon, then side line it safely while you do eggs.
