The Svea 9 is a classic with thumb screws, dimpled primer cup, external NRV and great graphics. 1915 Seva catalog Looking its age, rusted and tarnished like its owner. I believe this is Cyrillic (Russian) with the Svea company name Complete with original bottle and funnel. Marked SVEA Notice the tin coating on the legs that sometimes shows as blobs or drips from the hot dip. I want to thank Stan (magikbus) for the heads up on this. Stan found this while on a trip to Hawaii and took pics which he posted here on the forum alerting us all of his find. I was surprised that I was the only one to follow up on it. Hope you like the pics. Thanks for looking.
Hi Doug what a super score and what a real stunner, the engraveing is realy beautifull and ornate on this older version. Even the thumb screws on the burner and reserve cap, look great. Will you be keeping its original patina,or cleaning and polishing it.
Great I do do do like that stove. Well done Sir Maybe one will find its way to me one day Nice one - Steve.
Thanks Mr Optimus, If this was a vintage car I would recrome, repaint and reupholster it but this to me is kind of like a bronze statue.I'll keep it as is. Pollished it would not look right next to its box.At 60 yrs. old I don't wear a wig or dye my hair.It is what it is, old. Thanks Steve I also hope you find one .
A wonderful old stove. Collapsible, wing nut on burner and tank cap, has all its 'bits' including the spirit bottle, comes in its box, and those wonderful graphics! Simply stunning.
Lovely, lovely stove and fine photos Doug. Hurray for a stove with the patina preserved! I'm conscious of the fact that I should feature that Svea No.9 you sent me ... John
Hi Doug in your flame shot you have not got the flame spreader on is there a reason for this? The stove its box and accessories is fantastic. A Svea is one make of stove I do not have[I am sure that there are many many that I don't have] I must say in all of my stove hunts I have never come across one either! In the new year I will keep looking and if I find one as good as yours I will be over the moon!! Love these boxed sets. Nick
Nick your right. I took these pics about a year and a half ago and never got a around to posting them.I don't know why I didn't have the flame ring on in that pic. I found this one though. Getting decent flame pics is not a easy task for me.I need to convince Presscall to do a tutorial on that. The Sievert/Svea company made stoves with as high a quality as Optimus and Primus, often with better graphics.I swear this old number 9 has thicker brass then others but I don't know if I can measure that.
Hi Doug, you're right about looks & quality of the SVEA brand! There are a few exceptions however. I have a N°15 which was their "budget N°5" stove, made of thinner brass. Mine has a cracked fount! They also made a budget N°5 version for the Standard Oil Co., and I have a cracked one of these too! (1 out of 3) Now, nobody could foresee these stoves lasting soooo long so all in all still not that bad after all . All the best, Wim
Hi Wim, Sounds like you you've been unlucky. I have a lovely SVEA 15 that has survived through the years extremely well. Cheers, Graham
Hi Graham, that's a very nice looking stove! Maybe the plating protected it from atmospheric chemicals attacking it? Best regards, Wim
Hi Wim, It's a possibility I guess. If it's a stress crack I'd opt for it to be more of a manufacturing fault though. I'd assume the plating process is by electroplating. Perhaps Kerophile can chime in here, but maybe the passing of electricity during the plating process relieves inherent manufacturing stresses in the same way heating does? Just a thought, but I'm out of my depth really. Cheers, Graham
