Some people really like the Coleman 530 except for one factor. Its top heavy with a larger pot and isn't stable. Here's a possible fix for that.

Lance, nice guy that he is, sent me a spreader plate for my A 46 Coleman 530 and it works. I'd been mulling over about how to stabilize the 530 and the spreader plate gave me an idea. I found a piece of very light weight galvanized flashing and roughed out this apparatus. Tell me what you think, pros and cons before I proceed to make one out of heavier stock.

Using Lance's plate as a pattern, I cut out a 4" round plate and then eye-balled and cut some 1" wide slots at roughly the appropriate spots. I cut 3 pieces 1" by 3.5" and bent them to form an "L" shape. I then slipped them into the slots on the plate and sat the 530 in to see what it looked like. The "stand" fits like a glove but is built out of such light weight material that it doesn't stabilize the stove. It will though, if made from a bit heavier weight material.

So, what would you change, if anything? I think that 1/2" wide straps would work as well as 1". I also think that some sort of softener could be applied to where metal meets metal....either leather or rubber. One drawback may be the loose parts getting lost. As it is, everything fits in the container.

As an aside, this little fellow was visiting, as was I, at sons & DIL's this weekend. For some reason, she gets all stirred up about spiders...he's not but 2" long.

    Hello,
I think that is a pretty good idea. Have your tried it with a large pot filled with cold water and see how it supports the weight ?

Good idea! I like the 530 too, but it does have the stability issue. I was going to use the feet from a rusted out 520 tank, but my friend who gave me a good tank, asked for the dead one to salvage the feet, to replace busted or missing feet on his stoves.

    Chuck,
The flashing used to make the mock-up is very light weight material and offers no stability, almost beer can thickness. I used the light weight material because its easy to work with.

The questions have more to do with the general idea, shape or construction design.

My Father-in-Law told me that when he was a kid, (in the 1920's), they used to collect buckets of those Tarantulas, must have been breeding season...
Now, who in their right mind would want a bucket of giant spiders???
    Ugh!

Texas how are your abilities/possibilities regarding MIG/CO2 welding?

I think that i have refined your mockup, but it involves welding, threading and other metal work.

    Henrik,
Don't go spoiling a simple idea with technicalities....and extra work. No capabilities with welding, etc. I had thought of a sort of wire base, but so far my idea is doable and simple....like me.

Steve, used to see way more tarantulas than now. No idea where they've gone unless the imported fire ant gottem.
