Hi everyone, newbie here. I've found a Hipolito No.0 in my attic, and I'd like to get it working. It seems to be complete (apart from a lack of tools), and even has the trivet (which I understand is highly regarded!). However, it doesn't burn properly, I guess it needs new seals everywhere and probably wants cleaning out. Now, please don't assume that I know anything at all about pressure stoves - but I'm willing to learn! Could you possibly help me by pointing me in the direction of a supplier of spares, in particular seals, and also tell me what needs cleaning and how to do it? As I said, there doesn't seem to be anything in the way of tools in the tin, apart from a long thin piece of metal - no idea what that's for!
Welcome to the forum! You will find lots of help here. For starters, here is a link with photos showing some stages in replacing seals: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/20974 . Unfortunately there are no pics for replacing the NRV (non-return valve for the pump) but do a site search and you will find lots of info, also on various methods of cleaning. You can buy replacement seals from the Fettle Box. You would be best buying one of their kits - the B kit for the Primus 210/Optimus 00 will fit. There is some more info about the Hipolito no.0 here, and you'll find more pictures in the Stove Gallery under Portugal. The long thin piece of metal sounds like a pricker to clear the jet. The only other tool to be included would be a spanner to tighten the burner on to the fount. Let's have some pictures!
Thanks for all the useful info - I will be ordering a spares kit this evening. The link to the video was very useful, too. I was working under the assumption that the stove (being called a spirit burner, I thought) ran on meths, not paraffin!
All sorted now - seals and washers replaced, first picnic successfully accomplished! many thanks, all!
G,,day. My 0, I bought new in Portugal over 30 years ago. As a kind member here told me, knurled top of the pump rod unscrews to seal the fount when the burner is removed. The original instructions don't mention it. I hope this is of help to you. Cheers, Kerry PS - My tin case is as new and the trivet has never been burnt but I have used the stove.
Hi - I did eventually spot the "dual use" knob when polishing up the brass. What a neat little touch! Yours sounds like it must be in pretty much perfect condition. I will be keeping an eye out for a tin in better condition than mine, you never know what will turn up.
Hey, Kerry or Peregrine Can you post a photo of the pump end being used as the fount seal (unless there is a photo somewhere else here). Kerry, I hear there's been pretty wild weather in Tassie. I hope my chooks didn't get blown away...
Tony, as requested: The knob itself: In place on the fount: The pump handle sans knob: And this is where it goes so's you don't lose it!
Now I see what Kerry was talking about. Unfortunately the Hipolito No.1 does not have that arrangement. Cheers Tony
I spoke too soon - the stove is now burning very unevenly, and I guess the jet is partially blocked. I don't want to yockle around with a bit of bent wire and damage it, but I don't have a pricker. Can anyone please tell me what's the correct size pricker for this stove?
The jet size is 0.32mm You can get a pack of suitable prickers from Base Camp. You can also often get tins of stove spares from the bay of evil, these contain a jet removal tool which is handy if you find you have frequent problems with the jet blocking. You can then take out the jet and have a good clean around inside the burner tube to remove the loose carbon that is bunging things up.
