This came with both silent and roarer burners, each being marked 'Buflam', so my assumption is this is how these stoves were supplied from new. As expected, there's also a reserve cap - although with nowhere to park it, it's fortunate it didn't get lost. I've a few Buflam stoves already, but what attracted me to this one was the unusual appearance of the top on the roarer burner in the eBay listing, which I'd never seen before (or since). It turned out that the centre of the burner top was a small slug of steel which is removable to allow easy access to the nipple, similar in principle to that found on Burmos stoves. Unlike those however, where the removable part has a screw thread, on the Buflam the removable part is held in by gravity only - fortunate that didn't go missing as well! I intend to wire it into the burner to ensure it doesn't go missing in the future.
Hi David, Nice, interesting stove. I have never seen one of those before. I wonder whether their design of roarer burner, with direct access to the nipple, was adopted to get around the Townson and Coxson (Burmos) patent for a similar burner concept? Best Regards, Kerophile.
I've checked for any Twigg patents for their design of this roarer burner but drawn a blank. Possibly they didn't ever patent it. The design doesn't seem to have been produced in any great number and I can't recall ever seeing any reference to it in the literature. Perhaps it was produced for evaluation purposes only and found to be wanting... The Townson & Coxon patent for their screwed removable plug is HERE. On the final page is shown the design for their intended nipple removing tool (ouch!) and the patent refers to something similar for pricking purposes i.e. from above rather than from the side as we're used to. That seems a bit daft to me, but there you are... Interestingly, a non-screwed plug is mentioned on page 2, lines 42-52, but discounted on the grounds that corrosion might build up between it and the surrounding burner body. Perhaps Twigg saw that and decided to develop the idea further - thus the particular burner on my stove. As it happens I've never had this stove lit with either the silent or roarer burner fitted. Perhaps at the weekend...

Hi Chaps Well here's another one Just like Davids , but i had to make a shaped centre plug for the burner. the plug In place I got this Buflam roarer in a job lot of 6 burners from ebay & saw this lurking at the back thinking it was a screw in centre type with the middle missing but it turned out to be this rare one , a very good & interesting find & i hope David doesn't mind if i add mine here too for reference Stu
