I don't have an Optimus 8R so was happy to acquire this one the other day. Nothing immediately exciting about it that would normally warrant it's appearance in the Reference Gallery.

I did notice however, that the case is embossed '8R Made in Sweden' and has the circular 'Optimus Cover Up Label' as detailed by Ross in the Decals Library:

As Ross says in that post - "This big label was used by Optimus during their period post 1962 when they owned the Primus brand for liquid fuelled stoves. They often printed the Primus logo on the tin but if they used the tins for the equivalent Optimus product they covered up the Primus logo with this sticker.". Ross's label is 7cm across but this one is 4 cm (the 7cm would have been too big for the 8R case).

Ross has also posted in the Reference Gallery, an image of the Primus 8R showing the Primus label which on my stove has probably been covered by the Optimus label:

As I understand it, Primus never made the 8R. However, following the takeover of Primus by Optimus, some Optimus products were badged Primus to try and sustain the Primus brand loyalty. Eventually, the Primus 8R was dropped and any remaining Primus cases were converted to Optimus cases by the addition of the Optimus label. This would appear to be one of those stoves.

    The stove as received:

The bottom half of the case, spirit cup, burner and most of the tank was covered in what appeared to be burnt fat. Took hours to get it off. The paintwork is actually not too bad so I'm not going to re-paint it.

After a good strip down, new wick, clean and polish, it passed the flame shot and tea test with flying colours :) :

Edit... Not sure how the thumbnail shot appeared at the top of the post. Can't get rid of it.

What polish / technique was used? I can't for the life of me, get my gear that cleaned up.
