i have just dug my old Trangia system out of the garage and fired it up no problem. I'd forgotten how beautifully simple they are. I was wondering though, has anyone used any fuel other than methylated spirits to run them? Apologies if this doesn't count as a 'Classic Stove'.

Hi @Gavin Mulholland , The Trangia is deffinitely a classic! I run mine on a mix of propanol and ethanol that is the standard fuel here in Sweden, it used to be denatured ethanol but for some reason it changed. Rumor is some people filtered the old stuff and drank it, don't know if it is true. Some people burn methanol in their Trangias. The Trangia burner is not recommended for stuff like gasoline or keroseene, disaster lies down that way. /Lars
Hi @Gavin Mulholland. You asked about other fuels being used in a Trangia cooker system: As you have been advised it is a bad idea to use anything other than alcohol in the Trangia burner. Classic in the classy sense of the word. Alcohol in many versions is still alcohol. Careful if you try other volitiles (spelling?) combustibles. @presscall said "bio-ethanol" What bio fuel do you get there? Ken in NC

My Trangia kit is my favorite stove. Not powerfull, less than fuel stoves, but so damn simple, complete and safe ! And quiet... I have a noisy job, and noisy hobbies for the most, and I appreciate the silent running of this stove. Here, we find 90-95% ethylic alcohol, mixed with some acetone, to prevent drinking.
After my recent burned foot accident I am appreciating the safety of the Trangia system. Simple, easy, safe. I suppose they are not for mountain explorers, but for any camping I do the Trangias are my go to stove and pots.
Hi, Gavin, I agree with all who have called the Trangia a classic stove!! Yes, indeed!! VERY classic, and as has been mentioned, classy, too!! We love our various Trangia kits, and believe they are the Dog's B's!!! And, yes, the Trangia have been used up high, and in very cold weather, and can do the job, IF you do yours, me thinks. There was a long post on CCS about 2 months ago on the merits of mixing 8 - 12% water with the fuel to minimise soot. This is mentioned in the fine print on the original yellow plastic bag that comes with the new stove. I have tried this on new pots and it is definately worth while. Suggest you try this. (I love my Trangias.) Norm
It must depend on the meths available to you. Here in NC, USA I use the Home Depot available "denatured alcohol", which is mostly methanol I think. Burns clean with no issues in my Trangia 27 and 25 kits. I get my best buy however, at a local hardware in New Bern where the same methanol goes for less than $10 US for a gallon.
I try to look out for campaigns at stores that sells bioethanol fireplaces. Buy the clean stuff without "smelling additives" from pine etc. Did a quick searc. Right now this is USD3.27/liter, but only 80% ethanol. Donno what those missing 20% is. The stuff I have is (was) 96%.
