Hi all, first post. Picked this up recently. It holds pressure well and is my first 111. I think I'll keep the original paintwork, but would be interested to hear how to preserve the box - i.e get rid of -treat - the rust and stabilise the box as it is now. Cheers Trevor
@Trevor Storr Nice find! There are not many 111s branded Primus in the Reference Gallery. I like your idea of keeping the box as original as possible. I have (in the shed) a proprietary product that is excellent at getting rid of rust, but protecting the paint. It should be available in NZ, so I will dig it out tomorrow and let you know what it's called. Nice stove. Cheers Tony
Hi @Trevor Storr Welcome to CCS. You have acquired a good stove type. As for stove container restoration have a look through this thread and the links: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/høvik-verk-primus-no-210-restauration.33436/#post-341805 Best Regards, Kerophile.
Hi, after restoration, when your Pr.111 is a user, you might consider fitting a beer can liner: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/111-8r-case-tray-and-beer.11782/#post-310328 Best Regards, Kerophile.
@kerophile & @Tony Press , thanks for the links. I think maybe stabilise the rust and then wax to prevent further corrosion. Was the deal with Primus 111 (as opposed to Optimus 111) simply a matter of brand awareness in different markets? Regards, Trevor
Hi @Trevor Storr. When the Primus Trading Co. was formed in 1962 they rationalised the product lines of Optimus and Primus. In those countries where Primus and Optimus had established dealerships and customers loyal to a particular brand, they continued to produce stoves with both brand names. However, this was essentially a brand engineering exercise on near-identical stoves. In some countries, such as the USA, they seem to have marketed the Optimus 111, and the same stove, now re-branded as a Primus 111, side by side. In the early period of this programme it was common practice for the dealers to just stick "new" lables over the originals. This seems to be the case with your stove The CCS Site has the Primus and Optimus No.111 stoves in both the Primus and Optimus areas of the Stove Reference Gallery. This is a fair reflection of the history of this stove's production. However, it would probably be helpful to have an entry at the top of each 111 section drawing attention to the presence of both Primus and Optimus versions of the same stove. The same re-branding of an existing stove model is seen for example, with the Primus 210, which became an Optimus No.00 clone after the formation of the PTC. Best Regards, Kerophile.
