A very generous gift from a CCS chum I've assisted with something (thanks @SomiZ!). Something so small contains a lot - the Zippo lighter is my addition. CCS member @tetley had one of these and helpfully recommended the use of Mamod (of model steam engine fame) fuel tablets, a perfect fit for the fuel tablet container and burner. The set is easily carried in a jacket pocket and with just a small bottle of water to take along, it begs to be taken on a walk. Brew location. My timing with the camera shutter wasn't the best and I didn't catch the stream of coffee before the little cup was full. Refreshed, I packet up, pocketed the set and headed off home. Thanks again Zoltan! John
Looks a little like the Esbit espresso cooker [which also works on hexamine tabs] but much cooler and more exotic. Very smart kit.
Wow John What a nice trip and such an excellent presentation. These photo reports are really inspirational for me to go out for a walk with one of the favourite stove/brewer. Though there are some place with scenery whihc you just can't beat, but you can take your SportPresso with you: I'm really happy that you managed to acquire the right size of fuel tablets. To be honest I was reluctant to send 20+ years old hungarian fuel tablets, with a risk that Brittish post might confiscate the whole package becasue "includes flamable material". I'm modifying my SportPresso set to use IKEA candles, for better fuel efficiency and ease of use. Cheers Zoltan
What a great set looks like something to add to mt 8r :-). I'll see if i can make one to take coffee m/c capsules.
Very neat and handy, when all you need is a coffee. Really nice. May I ask 2 questions; In some photos there are 2 filters, I can see where the larger filter is used, what about the smaller one, where'd it go? Also, have you tried flipping the larger filter and having the rubber seal hold it snugly in place instead of just lying on the filter 'flange' ? Spudz
Coffe is closed between both. presso will be work without "upper" "larger" filter but - it will be different "coffe" not "presso" - in Poland we called them - "as turkisch"
That would be logical and is what I first tried but it makes the combination sit higher on the rim because then the lid clamping toggle doesn't clamp shut. As Gieorgijewski said, the little filter disc goes inside the percolator basket and the larger one on top, sandwiching the coffee grounds. Always good to hear from you Spudz. @SomiZ Thanks again Zoltan and thanks for the link to the video, which I enjoyed very much. John
Cost to me was 30 pence a shot for that particular shape/size of fuel tablet - probably a bit excessive, but I went for an authentic 'fit' in the burner pan. In terms of 'effort' John, I'm not sure if you mean the effort to use the outfit or the effort put into designing and manufacturing it. In respect of the former at least, the satisfaction of using the set transcends such effort by a very wide margin. Same motivation for using a 'classic' stove rather than a spark-ignition butane equivalent. John
@presscall & @John Paul Appleyard Green I like that little machine very much. If it makes good (as opposed to, lets say, the rubbish sold by coffee chains), it will be worth both the cost and effort - and the payback time won't be very long. In cafe retail, coffee is the most profitable line. I'm not sure what you pay in your countries, but the profit margin on the sold price is multiples of the cost of purchase and production (not fractions). Here in Tasmania I will pay between $3 & $4 for a good double espresso - making it at home, on the road or camping will cost me 50 cents worth of coffee. On a side note, I'm constantly amazed by what consumers in other English-speaking countries (New Zealand excepted) will accept as "coffee" over the counter - even from so-called "coffee" chains. Cheers Tony
@presscall I see that you are a man after my own tastes .... this cute little beastie is really only good for a single cup. The second cup and handle are redundant as far as I'm concerned. Speaking of the cups, how secure do you rate the clip on handles? regards John
I'm honoured to hear so John! I've not yet graduated to use of the second cup either. I anticipated sharing out the contents of the one with the second if I had a companion along but it's not a lot to share. I'm puzzled by that variation of the SportPresso with two outlet spouts in that the video Zoltan copied in shows the coffee just coming down just one of the spouts anyway. I like the catapult cup holders. They're functional in isolating the heat of the cup from the fingers and appeal to the gadget nerd in me too. John
The second cup may be if the coffee is diluted as an Americano cup of coffee from espresso. Well worth the effort if it were mine.
