I have recently restored this Optimus 99 to match with a Mountain Cook Set.

It appears to be bog-standard (although someone might tell me whether the hole in the base is a home job, or factory - see below).

It was very black and maltreated when I got it, but it was a straightforward fettle (except for the wick).

The Optimus 99 label has been damaged in a past conflagration.

Note the hole in the lower left corner of this photograph. Is this home made?

Tomorrow I'll post some photos on fettling this stove, especially the trouble with the wick, and the happy solution.

    Cheers

I wonder if somebody knows the reason for the notches on the windshield

Never seen that hole in the bottom of the case in any other photo of the 99.

Nor in any that I've owned or handled.

    Drainage of some sort?

Perhaps pinning it to the ground with a nail?

    Hi Tony
Its nice to see to bring back a 99 from oblivion. I'm curious about the "non-straightforward fettle" of the wick part.
Seeing with a Mountain Cook Set I assume it will be a user and no further polishing is required for the alu casing.
Have fun trips / cooking session with it
    Cheers

I'll do another post on the wick and fettle. It's better told with pictures.

    Cheers

PS. Yes, a user for where I can't get kerosene (that's another story).

Nice stove Tony, did this one come on your recent trip ? Could you post a pic of your Optimus 99 next to a Optimus 8 or 8r so I could see the size as I don't know anything about the 99.
Also looking forward to seeing what you got in China.

    Cheers
    Rob

For all intents and purposes, the same size. The aluminium case/pot & heatshield makes the 99 lighter.
