https://www.ebay.com/bfl/viewbids/382414405682?item=382414405682&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2565 I followed this auction out of curiosity only. I kind of understand the numerous bids leading up to the $800 neighborhood of this stove. Is there something special about this particular 41 that would drive the price up to almost 3X top market price? I understand it's a rare and iconic stove in good condition but this seems way overboard. Am I missing something or is it simply a few people willing to pay whatever it takes? Maybe it's as simple as Asian economies surging and collectors from those countries raising the norm. Jerry
I can see that the control spindle is lacking the screw fitting that locks it onto the burner fitting, so it’s not too good. Your 341 alcohol version is in better condition - post-fettle - and rarer I’d have thought, Jerry. John
Crazy-high bid war price, thanks for sharing it. I'm unaware of any reason that one would drive up the price (unless it's between 1941-47?) and otherwise agree w/presscall thinking yours being more rare. The seller vented some frustration ("seller added...: I do not end my auctions early!") and now he's elated that he stuck with that. In-general reviewing bid histories (ie bids I lose) reveals some typical patterns. This one, not so much, it's peculiar. Re: Asian buyers w/deep pockets, I just don't know. Seller only ships to US btw (but for $2,263 I'd make an exception if I were he, if buyer is outside US). In this case I share above opinion re the bids up to 800, it starts to get a lil crazy going over 800 (at 4AM lol). It was not a sniper contest. Bids B4 the hammer: last bid 11 secs., winning bid 37 mins earlier, (it was over 800 8 hrs earlier). It's not unusual to see price triple w/last 2-3 sniper bids within 8 secs and all with 4 digit feedback scores (some big import/export middle-man buyers). Not this one. This old school 3-way bidder war (850-2,263) was feedbacks all under 150. I'd snatch one if it happens but today I'm content to buy low and I no longer have a "gotta have it" thought process (I once did). thx omc
I've had a Asian ask me twice the last couple years if I would sell a 41 to him. I told him it was for my collection. Wonder if he was involved? That is more than 3X market price, mine at over $300 is sounding cheap. Now where is my 199? Duane
Thanks for your replies fellas. Hope I can do so well when the time comes to sell off my stoves. Jerry
I hope the seller gets his money. A couple years ago I was contacted by someone that must have seen the stove I had put up here a few years ago (another 41). He wanted to buy it -- but it was not a regular posting member, at least not someone I recognized by name or location. I was not too interested in selling it at the time. But eventually, after several exchanges, he offered enough that selling it seemed like a rational thing for me to do. However, I decided to make it contingent on making the sale face-to-face because he only lived a couple hours away (or so he said) and sooner or later we were bound to be close enough to do the deal. I never heard back. And now the price just went up.
Today I told my wife that a few years ago I turned down an offer of a Primus 41 for 450. Then I showed this auction. "OMG" was the reply. Ken in NC
And just to put this in perspective. A 41 recently sold on the NZ auction site https://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/ca...31.htm?rsqid=1f429b1df5c645b2b608f0e96ecbecc1 Only a 15th of the price although it did have a leaky tank seam
@geeves Hi geeves, I was watching this 41 on trademe and if I could have figured out how to sign up on the site I would have and maybe they have an area for people from other countries but I just couldn't find it. If I was able to sign up I would have asked the seller if he would have been willing to ship his stove to the US. Granted there were issues with the fuel tank/fount but this would have been an easy fix. With what it ended at and even if it cost $68 to ship it would have been much better cheaper then what the idiot payed for the 41 on ebay and I suppose there was shipping on top of the ridiculously high price he payed. Some people have more money then brains that is for sure. Cheers, Norman
I was thinking 150 was too rich. Trademe does accept signups from Aus and UK but that might only be for sellers.
I don’t know what to say about the high price. I agree with all the "good grief " I use a 41 as my car stove , it is very practical with its built in wind shield and roarer burner. It’s original, patina abounds. I will view it with reverence now, but I will still use it just the same. The pic is old. Cheers Rob
The fold out windscreen is what got me on these. The fat tank and the way it hooks onto the outside, cool features. Duane
The one on Trademe was a Frankie. with a non regulated burner. Seller wrote: Also note the burner is not original; there is no flame control on the burner. So not a good comparison. But that one on eBay makes me happy with my 1954 Primus 41 silent for $95.00
Over $2000 for a 41? Wow! Congrats to that new owner but is it really worth that much? Even if it was unfired I’d think that’s really high?? Me, if I had the cash I’d probably do the same. It’s a nice stove! I like the silent version. Built in windscreen and that chubby tank just makes it look so da cool! How about function? Is it similar in use to a 111T?.
