Well, well, well, We've seen something very similar (maybe an exact match?) and also from New Zealand. I called it an oddity then... it may be less odd now. There is/was question if that one was as-original. Coincidence... the original grate for his also went missing along the way. You can see his here. Due to historic details being absent and few known examples (so far) I hesitate to say it is a 4K, but it could be. From what we do know, "I think" we determined it is 4K or 4K is the closest thing to it. Have a look you may possibly learn some things, @Barrett may be interested in yours as well. thanks for sharing it, omc.
@Boogy SNAP! What a pleasure to see another 4K case with the cast iron manifold and burners. Mine had been an orphan till now, and whilst accepted as a 4k case the burners appeared wrong as other known 4k's had pressed steel manifold. Everyone here was great help trying to determine exactly what is was/is, but without another example it's always debatable. I had felt mine appeared original and untouched, I think your probably proves that now, these may be what they call transitional/early production models. Is your tank everdur ( non magnetic )? Cheers Barrett
Yes it’s everdur but it will need some work to get it up to scratch. The box is quite lightweight though. I think omc is right by saying it might be a transitional model using up old parts.
Hi @Boogy Can I ask another question that has bugged me about mine. Usually most Coleman 2 burner stoves have 4 wavey rings and 5 flat rings in the primary burner and 3 wavey and 4 flat in the secondary burner. Mine has 4 wavey and 5 flat rings in the secondary as well as primary. So have always wondered if someone added the extras or if this is another qwerk of this model with its cast iron hardware, which retains lots of heat and cooks very well in cold and breezy conditions. Cheers Barrett
The stoves at work at the moment where I have to extract the burner ring screw (snapped off).i will look tomorrow and count up the rings. I’ll make a new grill for it too.we should petition the experts and get a letter of our own for the stoves!
Hey @Boogy Hope you're still playing with the 4k because they're goodies. A few weeks ago I got some Jet A1 kero for my lanterns and thought why not. No smoke after a loonng preheat, but the pans would be soot black. I'll try Amish mix next. Back to fuelite to flush it out. Cast iron burners give some heat
Been too busy at work to look at it but will get round to it next week I hope. It’s sat on my bench looking at me.
Sweet, remember it's already somewhere near 69 plus years old, so no rush, just protect it as it's current custodian
Whangarei or Auckland depending on day of week. So we won't put them side by side to prove they both exist yet lol
Just rescued a 4 m today the legs on this one are different from the ones here they lock with the help of a spring loaded button, red control knobs, cast burner original owner says he has had it over 60 years even has instructions and parts listing im sure it will run,but the generator has been welded or brazed to the control tap so likely unsafe to use no worry anyhoo as my go to stoves are kero or meths powered or some times a little 8r
Ive had it running as far as i can tell the starting lever isnt working as nothing changed when i turned it nice clean blue flame once it had heated but not a big heat output from either burner though the burner caps were bright red now trying to find out how yhe control valve works to see if it can be improved
@Garth Sounds like you fuel pick up and F/A hole may be a little gunked up? Also try cleaning the burner rings, they get surface rust which restricts flow and can cause a underburn effect in the burner. Reassemble with flat on bottom and then wavey, flat, wavey etc with flat last on top. They don't need to be screwed down too tight just snug, but I did have a glowing cap that was cured by tightening a bit more.
Ive used it a bit now it works well no furnace but very economical on fuel it really does need a strip down as the case is quite rusty but as the seller said its had over 60 years hard use i doubt it will ever come close to my villiers or zip for output but its useable as is im still more likely to throw a 22 in the car for camping as theres no assembly required to use it at least till i get my campingo cleaned up that goes rather well but needs case repairs
Suppose comparing with a villiers may be unfair but its the only stove i have that can bend its own pot support with no pot on it the grate glows bright orange and collapses toward the burner
