Finally dragged out the Gustav Barthel, Juwel #1,,, or at least I reckon that’s what it is... The leather pump cup is shot, though I oiled it and it works,,, ish,,, Added kerosene, primed with alcohol,,, and it sort of lit,,, Pretty windy outside today, (where I lit it to see if it was going to spazz out on me), so the wind could be messing with it somewhat... Any ideas where and how to proceed would be welcomed,,, especially for new seals, a jet, and a new pump leather. The old stove is trying its best, just having trouble getting the pressure up enough,,, I think... Thanks in advance...
It looks like problem with NRV -------------------------- empty tank 1. with candle wax on nipple - pressurise - and under water check leaks - solve NRV problem 2. clean tank inside and burner
On a very rare possibility. I had trouble with my Juwel. I finally saw hairline cracks in the tank, losing pressure that way.
I’m not seeing any leaks or cracks at all,,, don’t mean they’re not there, just that I’m not seeing anything,,, yet. When I pump it, and for a while, there’s nothing, then suddenly kerosene is gushing out of the jet,,, then just as quickly, there’s nothing again. Once I get it lit, and it take two or three tries with alcohol, it continues burning by itself, but seems maybe to be starved for fuel. The vaporized kerosene is exiting the jet under some pressure, but there’s not much of it, and letting it burn a while, or pumping it while it burns changes nothing. Can’t post a video here, so I put up a 12 second YouTube view of what’s happening. No amount of pumping or longer time burning moves it beyond this point. Fascinating, frustrating, but still fascinating...
Hi @Haggis. If you have good pressure and a clear jet, i would suspect a choked burner. These are old stoves and many had a long life of hard work. The burner might need a de-coke. Scan down this post and read of some appropriate methods for cleaning petroleum coke from a choked burner: Ultrasonic Cleaning of stove burners. Best regards, Kerophile.
Thank you kindly... Following the links in the thread you posted,,, it seems I might want to make one of these contraptions to help burn the coke from my GB burner. It’s a real possibility and a place to start...
Thats the way to go, but it could be difficult to match the burner threads to the air-line. There have been posts by several users who show that a completely airtight connection is not required, as long as you can get a healthy flow of air through the burner to get burning of the coke. Bernie Dog actually says in the link I provided: “I have since made a simpler and better stove base fitting that does not require the special burner base thread. It accepts standard based burners and, with shims, will also accept smaller 1-pint size burners. It's a piece of brass round stock bored slightly larger that the outside diameter of a 2-pint burner base thread. The hacksaw cuts allow the jubilee clamp to draw the "fingers" in to hold the burner base. I shim the inside with brass shims to hold the 1-pint (smaller) burner bases. Only enough pressure is used to snug the burner in place so that threads are not deformed. Here are pics:” Illustrations are given in his post. Best Regards, Kerophile.
I would give the fount/tank a cleaning inside as well. Use 5-8 small magnetic bolts and nuts and circle them well around with some kero. Pour the kero out on a white cloth/toilet paper in order to get an idea of how dirty the fount may be. (Use a small magnet if you have troubles getting the nuts and bolts out again)
