I've bagged a Coleman 442 in reasonably good condition but without a generator. This is the sellers photo, not mine...

My guess is, it got blocked so the owner took it off and never replaced it. So what is the cheapest source for 442/533 generators these days? Cheapest is £17 inc delivery. Anyone know of one at a better price or I have a NOS Tilley control valve I'd be willing to swap... just a thought as I know some of you also collect Lanterns as well as stoves. I have a few other parts I'd be willing to exchange.

I'd put the original generator. £17 is good price!

That’s a negatory there Colin. Insufficient generator heating, small diameter non serviceable generator and no preheat cup. I’d consider that strictly for white gas. They do work pretty great on white gas though. The 550 had a kerosene generator option but even those were frankly inferior to the European kero burners.

Thanks. I was speaking to Norman for CPL and he told me exactly the same thing.

Has anyone had issues with the synthetic pump cup?
I exhumed my 442 that I overhauled last year with a new NRV, generator & service kit.
Today when I looked it over the contents of the tank smelled like a mix of ammonia and old beer. This was once Panel Wipe. It has never seen any unleaded, so I reckon it had dissolved old gum that clung to the walls of the tank.
The real problem is that I can't pump any pressure. The pump cup is just not sealing against the walls of the pump tube. It is a synthetic thing that just isn't a deep enough cup. Can you get a 'real', i.e. leather pump cup of the right bore diameter for a 442/533?

The cup in the service kit really is a joke. It is just a shallow dish of... Something man-made that isn't very thick.

I bought one of the cups from Fettle Box. I just don't understand how Panel Wipe could have 'gone off', unless it dissolved something that was already in the stove.
It was a good thing that I couldn't pump the stove as what was left in the tank looked like pee & smelt about the same. I threw it away immediately & I will wash the stove out to remove anything else that is nasty.
The 442 has more output than my vintage 502. Both have never been used with petrol & have virtually new generators that were replaced this time last year.

If you are between a rock & hard place, need the stove to work now, without spares...
remove the pump plunger, gently heat the plastic/rubber pump cup, then push it down onto
a firm surface (hole in surface to allow shaft to not hold up) and let cool while holding it in position.
If you're lucky, the pump cup will receive a little flair, and pump again.

Got the beastie going and she's a good runner! I'm using brake cleaning fluid which is pure naptha without additives and she works really well.

Congratulations Colin. They are a good little stove.
I purchased one new in the mid 1990's to use backpacking and apart from the shitty plastic pump bucket :rage: it hasn't missed a beat .
