Yeah, that is a beauty! Tempted? Shipping cost is really the killer on the bigger stoves. If that was local to me there would be NO tempted. There would be acquisition and ownership. Alex
Well I finally negotiated a good price and have it now in my hot little hands. Is there a tutorial in how to fettle the burners? I have one apart and am intrigued by the wicking device in the feed tube. Does this look reuseable, if not what are my options?. With all the innards removed from the burner should I be able to blow through from tank side right through the burner...not happening now.
That is a beautiful stove. That wick looks reusable to me. It looks like a cotton string wick wound on a thin long wire shuttle. If it were mine I would examine the wick closely until I understood its construction, take photographs of the wick from all angles, take measurements and then put it back. Then at your leisure you can practice making a replacement for when needed.
It looks reusable to me as well. I don't think it's a wick however. Fuel reaches the burner by gravity not by capillary action. Rather it is to keep the flame from pulsing. I have a gravity fed alcohol stove that uses metal rods instead of string for the same purpose. That rail makes me think the stove might be meant for a boat. Ben
I have Googled the model number...NOW E22 NOT S22...and have seen no others with the rail. Also noticed others have wooden knobs..this one has brass. No numbers stamped on the parts anywhere. Would like to know the vintage of this. Pre WW2 or later? Everything is sheet metal. Tubes are copper. Meths tanks are brass with some kind of clear coating. And what is D.R.P ? I have heard of D.D.R so not E.Germany but something of the mfg? Full fettle in progress, possibly flame shots later. My first alcohol stove of this type, it was a learning experience to say the least but I am confident of success.
DDR; Deutsche Democratische Republic (so, anything DDR is post WW2) D.R.P.;Deutsches Reichs Patent.(anything D.R.P. is pre WW2)
Forgot to add, I think the strands in the "wick" are asbestos. As long as it is inside the tube it is perfectly harmless. Be careful not to create any dust. The finer the dust, the more dangerous it is.
So I finally reassembled it and it needed only a few repairs. One of the valve needles was broken off and lodged in the fuel tube completely blocking it. This was repaired by pushing out the obstruction from the opposite end. I then had to shape a new needle on the remaining shaft end. I have posted a few flame shots. After this I will try to beautify the beast because I like shiny things. I now understand why other models have wooden knobs...the brass ones get very hot.
Today I tried methyl Hydrate (methanol) as a fuel for this stove.....complete failure. It is still sold as a fuel for alcohol stoves so what is my problem? Will light but goes out after a minute . The flame shots you see above were with DNA, denatured alcohol...that works fine. I am perplexed. Works fine in my cheap Chinese alcohol burner though.
Try bio-ethanol. It's basically ethanol with some denaturing agents so it can't be consumed by alcoholics. Ben
