I need a 18 mm burner gasket with a 12 mm hole in the middle. I think I'll have to make one myself but I don't know what kind of gasket material to purchase. Any ideas? I checked all the gaskets I have on hand and none of them fit. Fettlebox doesn't list the dimensions of their gaskets nor do they sell bulk gasket material. Thanks, Ben
You should be able to find a source in the US. What I would suggest. Performance Graphite Gasket Sheet 300x300x1.5mm Custom Turbo Exhaust Charger | eBay
Hi, I agree with John @presscall Novus 30 is the material I used for heat-resistant gasket making and it has been widely tested on stoves of CCS members over the years, with success. Heat-resistant burner washers, and fitting them. Best Regards, Kerophile.
Thank you @presscall @kerophile @pyro_P @CW your responses were very helpful. I couldn't find a U.S.A. source for Novus 30 so I ordered a 12" x 12" x 1/16" sheet of this: High-Temperature High-Pressure Graphite Gasket Material These sheets withstand temperatures up to 850° F and pressure up to 2,000 psi. and offer excellent compression under moderate loads. I'll let you know how it works. I've got a set of metric punches for making gaskets which makes the inner hole and outer circumference at the same time. Unfortunately not in the combination I need. So I'll probably punch the inner hole and freehand the circumference with an Exacto knife. Ben
Thanks for inspiring me to get on with it and make some for my Optimus 00 burners. I had some leftover high heat exhaust pipe gasket material made by Felpro - inexpensive from the auto parts people I clamped it between two pieces of oak, drilled four holes the diameter of the screw thread This way I made clean cuts out of the middle, as long as the drill bit was nice and sharp (a wood bit made a mess of the edges) I marked about 3mm all the way around the holes with a sharpie and then cut out 4 washers with good scissors. I always lubricate threads on aluminum or brass with black synthetic brake grease with lots of graphite in it Once tightened up and lit, there were no leaks. I retightened the joints once or twice, very lightly at a time and I am now very happy. I've done two of my three burners. The contact surfaces of one of the spirit cups were very badly scored so I made sure they were flat, clean and sealed properly.
