Nice find. With all the bits too. The pump ... In warm weather you can use the pump to pressurize the tank, put some fuel in the priming dish, unscrew the cap to remove the pressure, screw cap back on, light the priming fuel, and start the stove normally. Added pressure is not required in warm weather.
Did all of the Optimus 99 stoves come with fixed heat shields or did some come with the rotating type like is used on the 8R? I see both types in the pictures in this thread and was not aware of that difference. Also, from what I can deduce, all 99s used a burner/tank assembly that could be fit to the 8R front hinged case with rotating heat shield. Am I correct?
@IvanN , hell, I posted that seven years ago! LOL A frying pan just for US!!! I guess what's old is new again! Murph
Hiya Lyle Cross, The early 99's had an aluminium heat shield, the later 99's used the chrome plated shield as in the 8R model. Cheers Simon Foxxx
Howdy, @Mike G , Welcome to CCS! We've been considering moving up your way, to someplace in Utah. Outstanding State, in SO many ways! I'll agree with what the other have said about the 99. BUT, I do like to have a pump and appropriate fuel cap, with my 99's, 8r's, and SVEA 123 stoves. I also use them on my 199's, and the Loke 85. They have come in handy more often than what you might think. Do you NEED one to run the stoves? NO. But, are they handy, for when things go South on you? YES! Just my 'tuppence. One bit of warning about using an 8R, or 99: Do not use a frying pan that over hangs your fuel tank too much, or you risk overheating your stove, and popping the SRV in the fuel cap. I've only done it a few times, but learned quickly that it's better to keep your skillets and pots less than 8" diameter. Again, welcome to our Merry Group of Pyros!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
I was able to pick up a Optimus 99 that has the 8R Fuel tank/heat shield/burner assembly with the smooth bottom case. I saw one other like it on this site. So apparently Optimus did make that type of model for a short time until they started producing them with the fixed aluminum heat shield.
When I was looking for a 99,some didn't come with the separate heat shield. I bought the stove anyway. When I bought my other 99 it came with the strap, heat shield, and also the priming tool ( looks like syringe). I bought some aluminum sheet metal and made a heat shield.
