Hello, this is my first post. Thank you guys for all the knowledge I've gleaned from this forum. I bought this Primus number five without legs. I finally got the legs made and soldered on. My question is about the burner, the flames come out of one side a lot more than they come out the other. I have pricked and changed the jet, the results are the same. Is there anything I can do about the flame distribution, or is it just the way this burner happens to be made.
Best guess is there is a small grate/uneven orifice in the outgoing part of the jet. I’ve seen this several times - especially on some of the cheaper after market jets where the hole ain’t all round. Try using a strong magnifying glass and inspect the orifice? (Well done on the legs!)
Some times the pricker dislodges a small bit of carbon that gets blown back into the jet resulting in the eccentric flame pattern. i took the nipple out and flushed the burner out with the garden hose. Fixed it for me.
if it turns out not to be the jet, its probably a carbon build up in the burner tubes. Disassemble the burner and remove the jet. there are a few ways to go after the problem, soak it in acetone for a few days and flush, I ran a pipe cleaner into the 2 tubes and was successful in dislodging a large chunk or using a propane torch heating and dunking the burner in water to thermal shock it knocking any carbon loose. if you do any of these you will have to thoroughly flush the burner as any carbon will clog the jet when you try and run it.
Thank all for you for the ideas, I will tinker and follow your suggestions tonight. I am leaning toward crud in the burner tubes, since I have swapped out the jet, but it could be the jets also. It is an inexpensive ebay burner. Thanks again.
Jet seat could be aimed/machined out of vertical or carbon buildup on the underside of the burner, I poke around with some wire or a brush to knock off crud. Carbon under the jet will misdirect the fuel pattern. Duane
Well, I've tried all the suggestions several times. I've given up trying to fix this burner for now. I have just about come to the conclusion that the jet is aimed wrong or it was brazed together off kilter. When you are preheating with alcohol the flames around the flame spreader and center part of the burner are uneven like when the kerosene is burning. This leads me to think that something is out of alignment. I will look at the burner again in a few months. It's strange how when you leave a problem and then come back to it it's sometimes easily fixed. The stove is working well now with my silent burner.
@charlie lewis I could be that the burner is off kilter after being dropped or twisted. Are the tubes verticle and in line? If not you can put the burner hex in a vise and, using a piece of wood to protect the burner, tap the top of the burner to set it in the correct position. Tony
They are pretty straight and true, the inner tube that holds the jet may be off a small smidge. I thought about whacking it a bit but was afraid of cracking something. I will try your idea out when I mess with the burner again. Thank you
