In THIS post regarding a Shmel 2 with an unusual burner @Aleks-S very helpfully described a clone of the Shmel manufactured in the Ukraine: Intrigued, I’ve acquired one of the clones. Confirming those distinguishing features. The burner bell, separate from the burner, secured by a nut. The ink-stamped markings. In the instructions, reference is to ‘Primus Tourist’, no mention of Shmel, though the cover illustration and the schematic drawing show the Shmel-pattern pump rather than the brass pump the clone is equipped with. So, the pump. Brass, but with a rubber pump cup washer. To equip it with a facility to screw the pump knob into the cap the designer has built in an excessive measure of clearance! I wanted to put that right, but began by replacing the rubber pump cup with a more functional floating cup pattern and a leather cup washer. Taken from a scrap stove, prepared for silbrazing. Installed. The excessive clearance between pump rod and cap was resolved by making a washer, it’s diameter corresponding to the outside diameter of the pump tube. When the cap is screwed onto the pump tube the washer is securely held between cap and pump tube and creates a bearing surface where there was none before. That anomaly with the pump aside, the clone doesn’t compare favourably with a Shmel’s quality of manufacturing finish. A casting flash on the pump cap. Trimmed now. The pump housing on the clone is unaccountably lower than that on a Shmel. … resulting in a shorter pump to fit the available space without fouling the stove’s base. The control spindle and eccentric/pricker mechanism closely resembles a Shmel’s. All in all, and with that refinement to the pump completed, it’s a decent stove. John
Hi John. excellent acquisition for the collection, congratulations. There are inaccuracies in Alex's description, this stove was not produced by the Metallobyt plant, it was made by the Kultbyttovary plant, Dnepropetrovsk, this is indicated in the instructions for him. The Metallobyt plant is located in the Zaporozhye region of Ukraine. It is those stoves that have such a burner, and Tourist has a prefabricated assembly with a nut, without soldering. This is the difference, first of all, the burner, Metalloby stamped, Tourist - assembled from several parts. The rest is, in principle, correctly described. I did not have time to correct, I am in the hospital, with covid for the last 3 weeks
Thnx guys, now i am stability, but on oxygene therapy and recover, if saturation be stable 91-93 i go back home for reabilitation,in this Friday, l m lucky - if not be vaccinated, die 100%, with vaccine - all be without extended trouble. Vaccinated Sputnik-v 2 doses at february, but not check antibodies
I pray that’s so. Good job you got vaccinated, from what you say! Ah yes, the Google translator software got it (sort of) right then. I’ve had an afterthought about that rubber piston cup and the massive clearance between the pump cap and the pump rod. The pump worked, but not well, but I see now that the shape/depth of the pump cup and its tight fit on the pump rod compensated for the clearance by stabilising the rod’s movement in the pump tube.
I think, pump taken to complete from used stove, for sale. Like as is. But to correctly work it must be fixed 100%.
Pump efficiency improved, output is impressive. Simmer is achievable, but tricky, with a narrow range of adjustment requiring a careful hand. I may get around to altering the taper on the pricker eccentric, as in THIS post regarding a Shmel 4. Meanwhile, a prime example of an ice-melter/water boiler!
Excellent review. Nice to see odd examples coming from UKRAINE...not "THE" Ukraine. I do not live in "The" Canada, but I am of Ukrainian descent.
@Ed Winskill. Would you say "I live in the America" also? There is an article which explains how the use of " the " before a country name is offensive as it implies subjugation to some other entity..as an example. ..... Country Names and 'The': The Ukraine or Ukraine Remember Ed, this side of the Atlantic was once referred to as "THE COLONIES".
I don't need the explanation. I always say "Ukraine". In any event, in accordance with the Ineluctable Precepts, all offense is feigned.
Thanks for the correction. But for @Bratok_xxl’s and @Aleks-S’s knowledge I’d have identified it as a Shmel 2 variation and would have listed it under Russia.
Just an observation. The triangular form of the windshield on Shmel 2 type stoves contributes to a distinctive triple plume effect during the alcohol priming.
