You're very welcome. I pleased i was able to help just 1 person with my posts. And her is the online description-please note definition 2. As a lawyer you should have a vocabulary 10 times mine .
@Deleted Account 250821 , Well done with the word, "devolve". You taught me something new. Most lawyers are not what you think they are. They are often arrogant, disingenuous and self-important. Many consider themselves clever with words but you will find that this is only in a very narrow field. What you will also find is that some will use ridicule and sarcasm when another makes a valid point. My advice is not to call anyone names but to call out disingenuity, dog whistling, or sophistry when you see it, but do it in a rational way backed up with evidence. Just the way you have mostly done so far and you will find others who share your view will also join you. I find the CCS site serves as a good forum to express yourself and to learn what others think. Regards, Jaime.
Ross(?), Sure, I agree. And I also think @Deleted Account 250821 's reaction is "over reactionary", but I do admire his scholarship. It does take sometime for a member to 'feel' their way on the CCS platform and I've seen worse in the archives here. When New Zealanders and Australians call each other "morons" , "bastards" or "d!ckheads" it is not as bad as those from a more genteel northern hemisphere society and upbringing might assume. Downunder, we tend to be more direct and say what we think. It is a form of honesty i.e. 'what you see, is what you get'. IMHO, this is a hell of a lot better than mincing your words and being part of a clever 'clique', so to speak, on the site. I know you haven't cancelled his membership, but perhaps a a more 'congenial' or 'collegiate' approach might be in order-I could be wrong. Regards, Jaime.
@Jaime Massang Well thanks for the explanations to everyone Jaime. Maybe others cant handle our more direct approach(after all, kiwis and aussies have far more in common than not) However-behind the scenes ive demanded my membership be canceled and it hasnt. Tis will be my last pist otherwise ,as stated to ross in pm's,i would just be an empty vessel. The us constitution allows for unrestricted freedom of speech and for better or worse this site is us based with an international membership. Even a partial resrriction on freedom of speech is a breach of the constitution. WE may not have that in our bill of rights and your equivilent but THEY do and THEY broke it. I am usually far more abrupt but im mellowing in my old age! Goodbye
If you were privy to the banter between myself & my mates (some members here) you'd know the terms you mention above would be at the mild end of the spectrum, firmly in the 'Is that the best you can do?' category. Not everyone's cup of tea & I fully appreciate that & respect those that would find it offensive & if we were face to face I'd moderate myself in their company. It's not hard to do or dishonest. That is why it's pretty much zero tolerance for it here. Given the subject matter & membership it isn't necessary. We've gone 21 years with very little need for banning any one. Haven't even got close to that in this situation so a little baffled what all the fuss is about.
@Deleted Account 250821 , you dragged in the US constitution, I wonder why? The server (and that is merely a machine, not a person) is situated in the US but Ross (who founded this forum 21 years ago) is as British as they come! Other mods (like the late Trevor Hallyday, so sadly missed, David Shoucksmith, Christer Carlsson etc.) are British or Scandinavian (sorry to anyone I forgot). The influence of the US may be great, but not great enough to rule in Europe.
Cheers Wim. Aye, proud Pom, Limey, Rostbif here! Our server has been in the USA in the past but is now located here in the UK & managed out of Sheffield. That's where the zeros & ones are stored but of course we are an international community!
@Wim I mentioned the us constitution because the site WAS run from the us. Every membership orfanization operated from the us or us territory is subject to the constitution-and tgat includes freedom of speech -1st amnd. Not limited or controled but completely free. It would now appear tgat it is not run from the us and not subject to the us constitution. I would like to point out that ross agreed to cancel my account at my demand but has failed to do so? Honesty issues maybe
Even if the server were still based in the US, it's a private forum. Your house, your rules. We don't like it, we all know where the door is.
It is ironic when someone calls for "freedom" and is totally ignorant (not the right word) of the freedom of the other person. I seem to recall some saying in Zen teaching, or Buddhist, "Remember that the other person is you".
It's unfortunate, imo, that this ended abruptly with jade carving Kiwi Jadekayak (acct. cancelled at his request). Self proclaimed Queen's English expert was a typo king mixing in Kiwi speak. ...not shy to share opinions, some welcome, some not, but boring he is not and no dummy. It was interesting while it lasted, I tried to follow somewhat. His stated interest: DIY pieces (mods/frankies ), he is active on this front displaying high level skills that fit right in w/our hobby (... used to run a brass/bronze foundry in bangkok). source *so long farewell to JK *a friendly good bye, the origin is a mystery
He had some varied experiences, and I’m also sorry he left, though I did want him to tone things down some — mostly regarding verbal abuse towards people who had experience that he did not. So it goes. Interesting that this purportedly thick-skinned Kiwi was so insulted by rebukes that seemed mild to more genteel folk. (This last poke is aimed more at @Jaime Massang than at jadekayak, who is no longer here to respond.) While we’re at it, the reason for avoiding personal insults that we might use in face-to-face conversation is because we’re not face to face. An insult delivered with a smile and a nod (maybe a tip of the glass) is often not an insult at all, especially if done between friends. If you can’t see the other’s face, and especially online where you’ve never seen their face, it’s too easy for misunderstandings to arise. So let’s keep it nice. And apologies to all who think I didn’t. ….Arch Edit: BTW, “gabacho” is not as bad as I may have implied.
I don't think that jadekayak was insulted by any rebuke but that he felt put down by his point as to fixated political correctness (PC). I think that most of us here are of an age where we also find PC tiresome. Sure, the word "manager" is gender neutral, but English is gender- based and I distinctly recall as a child being corrected to use gender specific nouns. The English language abounds with them. There is nothing more absurd in trying to avoid gender e.g. a manhole is still a manhole and not a person hole. We address male chairmen as Mr. Chairman and female chairmen as Mdm. Chairman, not Mr. Chairperson or Mdm. Chairperson, respectively; although I've seen Mdm. Chair used. Mr. Chair would just be plain ridiculous. As to the 'genteel' poke, this has more to do with the historical attitude of the Brits towards the antipodes and the resultant inexplicable 'cultural cringe' Australians ( and I suspect, New Zealanders) experienced. There is no logical basis for it and it would be foreign to Australians of the current generation.
While I am familiar with the other two names, I didn't recognize Rostbif as a reference to Englishmen. ( It was obvious what it meant from a rough guess at the phonetics which sounded very Indian, or Welsh.) I suppose it is entirely understandable as we sometimes refer to the French as frogs after their penchant for eating frogs legs. https://theculturetrip.com/europe/france/articles/french-people-call-english-roast-beefs/
