I've a Prabhat lantern, a Petromax clone, and though it works pretty well, the quality is unimpressive. Not so with this Ajanta, which is very well made and with some excellent engraving

The burner too is well constructed ...

    ... the pan ring sturdy

Alas, the stove has taken (and survived without springing a leak or developing a stress crack) a heck of a clobbering ...

... which with a couple of brass washers added, gave the dent a distinctly fishy look

    Works fine, a powerful stove

    Nice catch, John. ;)

And, do I spy water hawthorne behind the stove in your pond? Love that stuff. Smells like vanilla iirc.

Yes, that's the stuff Gary. Apparently the roots taste well too, cooked presumably. Haven't (yet) got around to uprooting any to try.

A very nice stove, John. Do you know if they still make them?

I work with a lot of Indian nationals. They visit the homeland regularly. Perhaps...

My brother is working in Korea. I've asked him to look into what is there.

Truly Jim, I don't know whether the Ajanta is still in production, but even if not I expect it wouldn't be difficult to track kero stoves and lanterns down on the Indian sub-continent, whether new, new/old stock, used, because of the sheer scale of production there.

That example of mine has a story to it. This Gujerati script was engraved on the tank wall at one point ...

    1277317678-2.JPG

I got it translated and it turns out to be the name and address in the UK of the purchaser, an Indian gentleman presumably over there on a visit.

The colleague who translated it for me, a UK national of Indian heritage, explained that it's common practice there when a purchase of pots, pans and yes, stoves, is made for the vendor to engrave the name and address of the buyer on the utensil or appliance. My informant even described the type of engraving tool used and had seen it done when over there.

If you could persuade any of your colleagues to hunt around for you I've a feeling there'd be rich pickings right enough!

    Regards,

    John

Got me thinking whether I could ask the folk I know from India to look out for stoves for me too ...
