    Fine for a trial-run but DO NOT use this in anger! [-X
    At the very least find an olive and pipe to suit the gas compression fitting. Will cost a few cents and make it 100% safer.

    +1 on using the correct size pipe and olive.

    Very risky using a flame to test for leaks too even if you were confident that there wasn't one and it was outdoors. The heat from the flame might easily have expanded something to open up a small hole. Soapy water is a much better bet and it would show you exactly where any leak was.
