Not much of a look-alike when it gets down to it. Trangia 27 on the right.

The Bulin is more Trangia 25-sized in actual fact and has wire pot rests as the early version Trangias had ...

No kettle, no second pot, but the Bulin kit throws in a butane burner.

The Bulin alcohol burner (on the right) is taller than a Trangia burner and of lesser diameter, so a Trangia burner won’t fit in the Bulin’s lower windscreen.

I need to try out the alcohol burner at night time to get a proper appreciation of its burning characteristics. Lively when the alcohol had warmed up when boiling water in the pan ...

The butane burner is disappointing. It works fine in the upright gas cartridge mode ...

... but flares and continues to do so when the gas cartridge is inverted

The burner’s equipped with a pre-heat loop, suggesting it would be able therefore to vapourise liquefied butane feed from an inverted gas cartridge, but it simply doesn’t project into the flames. After extended use with the gas cartridge upright, there’s been absolutely no discolouration of the loop, which clearly isn’t getting hot at all.

Bending the loop into closer proximity to the burner wouldn’t help much I suspect, since the loop’s not tall enough for other than a fractional section of the loop to impinge in the flame tips. Disappointing as I say.

    Marked jet size is 0.4mm

Testament to the original design that it's still going strong & still being copied.

True, but although curiosity got the better of me to check it out and I bought this new at a fraction of the price of a new Trangia, my advice would be to spend about the same on a used Trangia.

I would not, but you did, and we all thank you John.
Did you consider wrapping some brass wire around the coil?

I doubt that’d help Ken in this instance because there’s so little of the loop anywhere within reach of flame tips.

It wouldn’t take a lot to cut out the top part of the loop and silbraze in another longer piece but I doubt I’ll get around to that somehow.

Roger Caffin did a mod to the Brunton stove stand for canister stoves that allowed inverted use without a generator loop. A plate of brass ran from the flame to the fuel line. It worked quite well even though the brass piece was more than a few inches long. Apparently it takes very little heat transfer to work vaporizing the liquid fuel.
I paid for the article in '08, long before I joined here.
I cannot find the article, without paying for it. I seemed to have lost the privilege.

Here is an image I downloaded from bushwalkingnsw.org.au
It shows the priciple, and worked quite well. I do believe more manufacturers made loops for inverted use much better since 2008.

I wonder if the fuel line has a cable in it, or is simply a tube. If a tube, without the cable, that would be a lot of liquid to vaporize.

    Very interesting, Ken, thanks.

I’ve an ALP stove that does much the same, with a pre-heater ‘loop’ that isn’t tubing, but just brass rod.

In that thread though I established that it was a bit slow to pre-heat, but did the job well enough once it got around to it.

If I recall, the setup he described did require that the stove start in normal position and invert as the brass got heated up. Much like priming does.
I have the one I made, somewhere in a box in the shop.

I bought the butane burner attachment from EBay for $17.47 USD, last year, with the intent of fitting it inside a Borde Flask-cooker -- a personal Grail Quest.
Unfortunately, the device was too tall to fit inside the aluminum chimney, although the diameter was OK. Modifying either the Borde Cooker or the gassie is not acceptable. Maybe if I sell my truck, I can afford a real Borde Bomb.
It came in a soft bubblewrap envelope, inside a black nylon stuffsack, with no markings, definitely no Bulin logo. Same coloring: orange anodizing on en417 gas connector, brass ''preheat'' loop, silver braiding on line.
I have not fired it up yet. I was thinking of buying a Trangia pot set. Will this device fit the Trangia's center hole?

The Bulin does, yes, but it’s a loose (sloppy) fit. Ok though.

All the best with your project.

The storm cooker marketed by swedish Biltema seems to be made by the same factory with cheapest finish in Trangia 25 size and very sloppy fit.

Photo from norwegian Biltema online catalogue - i bought one nearly unused for 50NOK just to compare with other makes and yes, nearly every Trangia gives more value for the money.
