Hey Doc, a generous offer indeed, but I've not long ago emailed Richard Wolfenden ('lanternking') with a request to seek one out for me. Tell you what, rather than have you risk twisting an ankle rummaging in the Hobbit Hole (as indeed I risk doing in my shed/garage), I'll see whether Richard comes up with the goods, and if not I'll take you up on that. Thanks again Doc, John
Hello John I hope you don't mind me asking... but you said the stove was cheap as chips. can i ask how cheap would that be ? and was it purchased from this side of the water ? No sorry i forget my new location now,,,, your side of the water.
Hello Andrew. I enjoyed your reflections on the true value of 2/6 in that topic I posted on the meths stove by the way. Now, let me look through my inventory of recent purchases ... let me see ... ah, here it is ... mmm, indeed, a British source Bunch 'o stoves £9.99 (+ postage) for the Fiesta M-1950, an old Primus No.1 with a shallow primer cup (did a topic on firing that up somewhere), a Parasene stove in a rather grand red tin box and a cast-iron pan ring marked 'Veritas Lamp Works'. I'm happy with that, especially if I get the M-1950 fettled. The Parasene, now there's another topic in the making, because it has a story to it ... All the best, Andrew, John
Hello John... Now that was a good buy.. Cheap as chips indeed.. I remember my first encounter in the chip shop, a bag of chips was 2d. but for the life of me i couldn't understand the bit about "cod and chips four times please" which was different to "four cod and chips please".. But anyway so long as i got my jar of cockles, i was a happy little boy. Not wanting to sound like Columbo...Just one more thing John... are you involved with the civil fire service, or MOD ?
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. 9 to 5, five day working week as their Press Officer and one week in three on 24 hour call. I don't put fires out, but go to major incidents and 'fatals', ride fire engines, go up in the cherry pickers and cop for taking forensic photos on occasion. John
Back from the dead for my M-1950 with the arrival of a spare part from the ever-helpful 'lanternking' In a brief email exchange, Richard told me that he had a spare from the Rogers version of the stove. It fits mine (a Fiesta), but the hexagon flats aren't quite as deep. Happy to have a component with those threads though! I suggested in my first post on this topic that whoever had filed down the threads had probably done so because they'd distorted the threads in the valve housing with the heavy-handed use of a spanner (wrench) and couldn't reassemble the parts. Here's the evidence Sure enough, the new part wouldn't screw in, not even remotely. Now, I've a modest set of taps and dies but wasn't hopeful that I'd have a match for the threads in question. I was wrong Eighth-of-an-inch British Standard Pipe threads! Having established that the die was a match for the threads on the sleeve, I soon had the tap at work and eased out the damage Just prior to reasembly in this shot. I made a soft, annealed copper washer to provide a positive joint seal and not rely solely on thread sealant Ok, with the set-back I'd had, I felt that firing up the stove was overdue, so I contented myself with replacement of nitrile washers and deferred electrolysis of the tank and other cosmetic touch-ups to another day. First off, the flame was colourful, but I judged that it wasn't fuel-rich and that it would clean up as the white gas/wasbenzine/Aspen 4T got to work It did
Nice one John. Lanternking is a guy worth knowing, he is, or has! should i say tracked down the square spare generator holder for the Rogers m1950 stove. All i have to is pay him !!.There is always a downside to these stories.
John, You've done some excellent work. A very expert fix on a bad problem. I really like the purple flame (looks purple to me). The stove appears to be burning quite well, plus, I really like them M-1950 stoves. Hat's off to you! sam
