Can anyone shed some light on the US and/or Canadian retail price of these stoves, circa 1950? I want to compare the price to Australian retail price in mid-1950. 1. Coleman Stove model 6J (two burner suitcase, gasoline); and 2. Coleman Solus model 532E (single burner, kerosene). Thanks in advance, Cheers Tony
Not sure what a 532E is, but I can tell you that the sale price of a 532 Solus (silent burner, USA manufacture) at the Maxwell Hardware Company (in Oakland/SF bay area, CA), on 1-29-1951 was US$ 3.66, $.13 in tax, total of $3.79. Coleman Solus, USA - 1950 *
Strange to look at those old prices. Income and prices even in the late 1960s, when we got married, seem tiny; but they didn't then. From '67-'70, my university years, before law school, I went to classes in the morning, and worked a full-time swing-shift job from 2-10 pm. My yearly income was $3,300, enough to support a wife and two children, and pay all tuition and costs. I imagine a lot of us here had similar situations...
My first job as an adult payed $1.57 a hour and everyone got the same pay working for the Dept Of Highways. 1971
In this 1950 Coleman Catalogue the Canadian retail price for the Coleman 6J stove is C$13.95 (wholesale C$9.76); and the Solus retails at C$6.75. Tony
The OP is requesting Canadian / US prices. ...and we have answers, nicely done! Moving on to eventually compare to Australia prices. Seeing price difference for Solus CA vs US, "initially" i thought of exchange rate BUT (and for readers) the Solus models can be quite different US vs CA (vs AUS.?, copies? by license w/Canada). For this effort you may want to include model #s for the Solus comparisons? Sorry if that might take away from results of the effort.
@OMC Your conclusion that I’m looking to compare Aussie retail prices with Canada and/or US retail prices is correct. I chose 1950 as I have paperwork, it’s far away but post WWII, it’s before all the tariff walls came down, and it’s before production of Coleman stoves in Australia began. The model numbers I’ve used above are those in the paperwork I’ll post, but any similar stove will do for US prices. Cheers Tony
