New member here. I've recently purchased a classic Swedish sailboat that included a pristine Optimus 535 alcohol variant. It works great, but for the sake of economy I'd like to convert to kerosene. Based on what I've researched, the best burner for this conversion would be the Hanse No 1...? It's a bit pricey, but considering I plan to take this boat around the world, decent burners are a worthy investment. So my questions are: Is the Hanse No 1 the proper burner for this stove? Second, who is the most economical source for these? I am located in the US. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
G'day @AmericanVagrant and welcome to CCS. http://www.base-camp.co.uk/ Have a look at these posts on converting alcohol stoves using Hanse burners. Although they are different stoves there is a lot of useful information for you. https://classiccampstoves.com/threa...ner-205-32a-leaks-kerosene.33840/#post-346323 https://classiccampstoves.com/threa...-new-kerosene-burner.32891/page-2#post-337571
@AmericanVagrant Ultimately it is your choice but there is a very valid reason for running on alcohol if you are keeping it on the boat. Namely, fire safety on board. Alcohol fires can be extinguished with water. Whereas oil based fires can become worse when water sinks through the hot fuel then flash boils into an aerosol that will explode. Regards John
Hi there American Vagrant. Not sure if you still have the burners for the stove. I have what i belkeve is the equivilent in Kero on our yacht (a Tartan 34 out of Texas) and would be interested in a swap. There are 4 burners in total including the oven. If you have already done the conversion and still have the alcohol burners i am keen to convert my stove. Could you let me know how you want to proceed. Thanks. Don.
Thanks for that information, was useful. At first I bought the cheap regulating kerosene burners but I wasn't able to get them working properly, so have bought some Hanse ones to replace them. Should have gone with the Hanse from the beginning Good point, I'll need to be careful and always keep my fire blanket at hand. Hi Don, the alcohol burners are aboard my boat which is down in Ensenada right now. I was planning to sell them on ebay but would be happy to sell your old kerosene burners instead if you'd like to swap. Not sure how I would get them to you though...I'll bring them back stateside with me at the next opportunity, but that may not be until next winter! It would probably just be easier for you to buy some on ebay. Shipping from MX to US is fairly expensive and often unreliable.
