I found these at Carcoar, New South Wales, recently. I remember them as a kid (or at least something similar).

    Against standard sized "Redhead" matches.

They cost me the princely sum of $3. I haven't lit one yet (an probably won't).

    Cheers

Nice find Tony, I do believe that they were phased out in Australia sometime in the 60’s, maybe earlier, due to the risk of starting bushfires. If flicked from a moving vehicle, the chances of hitting the ground still lit was/is very high...

What a wonderful piece of paraffinalia. If they were mine there'd be one less match in the box. I'd light one, photograph it, and put the photo in the "Post Your Flame Shot Here" forum thread.

Great find, love the metal box.

I wouldn't be able to resist dunking one in water and seeing if it still lights.

I ended up buying a box of Duncan's on eBay. When they arrive I'll light one and post a flame shot.

Will that post be of you using it to light the number 9?

Here is the promised flame shot (after being underwater for a couple of minutes).

    PB080849.JPG

The tin arrived full of matches and had some cloth in the tin for tinder I suppose

    PB080846.JPG

The matches themselves are smaller than I imagined and do not appear to be strike anywhere. I tried to light a couple of them on the bottom striking area and got nothing.

Ha, you are incorrigible, like Tony said.

And set next to a box of UCO 'Strike Anywhere' matches.
