* Do you spend a lot of time trying to find a particular stove in the 'Catalogues & Parts' section of the SRL (Stove Reference Library)? * Do you also continue your stove searching in Instructions, Advertising, Labels & Packaging and Documents & other ephemera? * Do you sometimes try and find the timeline of a stove, the date it is first mentioned in print and when it disappears from our documents? * Do you want to see how the features of a stove changed over time? I have constructed a spreadsheet document with hyperlinks to the stoves of all the Swedish manufacturers posted in the SRL on CCS. The spreadsheet was constructed using 'OpenOffice'. It will also work in 'LibreOffice' Both Office suites are Free, Open Source Software for PCs, Macs and Linux. Information and download of OpenOffice is here. Information and download of LibreOffice is here. Recently 'Google Sheets' has made an impact on Microsoft Excel dominance. The spreadsheet document can be opened in 'Sheets' on Android devices and there is a version for the iPad and iPhone. My computer is an iMac and I can use the spreadsheet successfully in the online version of Google Sheets. (Note: Excel will not allow hyperlinks to sites that require a login and so the hyperlinks will not work in Excel) The spreadsheet is not perfect. It was originally created for my personal use. You are welcome to use it, edit and personalise it. Restrictions: subscribing members will be able to use all hyperlinks in the spreadsheets. Non-subscribing members will be able to use all hyperlinks except those linking to 'Catalogues & Parts'. Updates: I will post further copies of the spreadsheet when new Swedish documents are posted in the SRL. Just look further down this thread and the updates will be clearly marked. Download the spreadsheet then open it in OpenOffice or LibreOffice or Google Sheets. https://classiccampstoves.com/ccs_files/swedish_companies.ods - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Using the Spreadsheets You must be logged into CCS. The spreadsheet document is composed of seven sheets covering all the Swedish Manufacturers in the 'Stove Reference Library'. The codes underneath the dates are: Cat – Catalogue & Parts Ins – Instructions Ad – Advertising L&P – Labels and Packaging D&o – Documents & other ephemera Clicking on a Date All dates are hyperlinks. Clicking on a date takes you to a page showing the whole Catalogue, Instructions, etc. Clicking on a Stove tick (✔) All 'ticks' are hyperlinks. When a stove tick (✔) is clicked you are taken to the page that shows or mentions the individual stove. I hope you find this spreadsheet useful.
That must of taken many long hours Trevor! You are to be congratulated on the time & effort you put into that. I made a start on a similar spreadsheet about 10-12 years ago & it defeated me! Thanks for posting the tutorial - it will certainly help people get the most from it.
Trevor, Congrats on an enormous job well done ! WOW ! just WOW ! An amazing research tool just got 5 times better. I've used it's predecessor and in coming days & weeks I'll dive into this latest release (much much bigger i see). It is a tremendously valuable time saving tool to streamline access to the site's complex content. If I compare researching without a spreadsheet to using your spreadsheet ...this is nothing short of an absolutely amazing breakthrough. The scope... it is enormous!!! There's no list (just a list) even close to how comprehensive your interactive spreadsheet is, anywhere. very much appreciated best regards mark
I've also placed a link at the top of the Stove Reference Gallery & am adding to all the Swedish sections.
Google Sheets For members who want to use Google Sheets, here is some extra information. In the Open Office version I have used the 'Freeze Rows & Columns' so that the stove names, the dates and the type of publication always stay in view in the window when scroll is used. If this is not done the spreadsheet becomes very hard to use. When loaded into Google Sheets, the freezing disappears. However, Google Sheets lets you freeze rows and columns in the 'View' menu. If more information of this is needed I could create a small tutorial.
Update 1 Here is the latest edition of the spreadsheets. It includes Bo's recent large Optimus No. 1600 catalogue, the 1962 Primus catalogue from Ross, plus some other amendments. https://classiccampstoves.com/ccs_files/swedish_companies.ods
Wow Trevor, that really is a tremendous amount of work! I'm doing something similar for just the Coleman 237 lantern here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...tnrjJQWp6b8oEAX2DVg-VsJ3o/edit#gid=1296688065 It is a collaborative effort and anyone with a 237 can fill in theirs.
@phaedrus42 Hi Phil, yours is a very interesting project. I hope you keep regular backups in case someone accidentally makes mistakes or wipes it! Your spreadsheet at the moment shows raw data. Do you intend to analyse the raw data and present it in a form that is easy to understand?
@shagratork , yes, I would eventually like to be able to statistically analyze the data to get an idea of how the features changed over time, what the geographical distribution is, etc. With Google sheets, one can fortunately roll back and revert to any point in the past if anyone does something nasty. I think we could learn a lot using the same system to gather data on other lamps and stoves. Even though I put up the template, the data belongs to the community and anyone is welcome to use it for their research. It could use the help of a spreadsheet wizard with the analysis and presentation in graphic form. I think we still need many more entries before we can draw accurate conclusions about this model.
Hi Trevor, I have just been using your Magnum Opus Speadsheet for some current research. It is a very impressive and useful tool. You certainly deserve a medal for this endeavour. I was able to use the spreadsheet to cross-check the availability of certain Optimus stoves, with my old-fashioned eyeball check of dated Catalogues etc. that I undertook earlier this week. So far we are in agreement. I will certainly be a regular user of your spreadsheets for my future stove research. Very well done! Best Regards, Kerophile.
@shagratork Bloody marvellous Trevor. Just been using your spreadsheet to date a Optimus 96. It made it too easy. Thanks
Update 2 Here is the latest version of the spreadsheets. It includes Bo's 1931 Primus 70/71 catalogue, which meant adding extra No.71 models. There are also links to two sets of instructions for the Optimus No.5R, which were spotted by 'eagle eye' kerophile. https://classiccampstoves.com/ccs_files/swedish_companies.ods
o.k. @Spiritburner - You give me the answer... Today i found it: No 1I and 15 - We can ignore this information, or store them. If store - then thats ephemeric model need to be placed in the "any time line" near other - from the same time. IMO - We need "full list" of known types with "year" of productions. thats Hyperlinked doc... could realise thats.
Update 3 Here is Version 4 of my spreadsheet, dated 30th July 2018. There are MANY additions and some corrections. https://classiccampstoves.com/ccs_files/swedish_companies.ods
