I've discovered my Monitor Express lipstick burner has a split in the end where it has been previously peened whick explains its flaring. Does anyone have a source of replacement lipsticks please - used, NOS or copies? A normal 17B lipstick fits but the stove doesn't sit properly in the case.

    Paul.

@Paraffinhead Could you provide a photo of it Paul? I’d be interested to see the damage and am willing to fix it for you - no charge.

I’ve always considered ‘peening’ as a bit of a bodge. It can work, for a time, to restore an enlarged jet orifice to somewhere near correct specification but in doing so thins and work-hardens already thin metal so a split isn’t surprising.

I've silver soldered a tip when I opened up a hole while pushing out a caved in burner. I have so many stoves, my peened lipsticks don't see much use.

Many thanks John, here’s a pic. As you can see, the tip seems to have cracked where a previous owner got a bit too keen to peen

That can be repaired, even I was able to repair a split worse than that.

@Paraffinhead Certainly fixable - vapouriser tip polished, short piece of hypodermic needle of 0.23mm bore inserted, silbrazed flowed over the tip, needle insert trimmed, tip re-profiled and polished.

I’ll send you a message with my address.

Took delivery of the vapouriser. I see what you mean, peened to death!

I cleaned the tip with a wire brush in a Dremel

Though the peening had split the metal the jet orifice was still oversized. That’s a 0.32mm pricker, when only a 0.23mm pricker should fit.

24-gauge hypodermic needle inserted, reaming its own hole by twisting it between finger and thumb, thanks to its chamfered (sharp!) tip. @Tony Press contributed that elegant refinement - I was drilling the orifice out with a microdrill corresponding to the outside diameter of the needle.

Silbrazed. In one operation the needle insert was secured and the split and irregular hammered contour of the vapouriser tip was rectified.

Excess needle trimmed, tip cleaned up.

Just visible, the stainless steel needle core. The tiny ‘holes’ are bubbles in the molten silbraze.

    Tried out on THIS Monitor.

@Paraffinhead Did me a favour actually. I fired up the Monitor with my vapouriser and the jet orifice was enough oversized to produce yellow tips to the flame. My standards for stove performance must be more picky than when I got that one ten years ago!

Same process. Notice how the spirit cup is larger on the earlier production models as this one is.

Light levels had dropped since I photographed yours fired up. Blue flames red metal more obvious consequently, but same output.
