This has been hanging about as a repair project, the burner rose having more holes than metal remaining, presenting a tricky silbrazing challenge (wafer-thin metal) that I kept putting off.

Glad I got around to sorting it out. It's taken a few knocks to the vulnerable fuel tank over the years and it's not the earliest 'scorpion tail' Norma, which evidently go back to the early years of the 20th century, but I'd judge this one dates from the 1920's or early '30's

The burner required a delicacy of touch with the blowtorch to re-unite the embossed top to the lower half and to patch pin-holes in the base. It's not the prettiest of repairs but will be good for another ninety years I reckon

The filler plug is a lovely fabrication of two pressed brass sheet components, joined with a folded flange

Quite a powerful burner too, so it soon had the kettle boiling

Bit of a side story, relating to the machine this description refers to

Every day in work at fire service HQ I head past this old timer

That Bramah pump, having a pressure vessel sphere hammered out of sheet by hand, has the nickname 'Norma' henceforth
