Hi all. Looking to make my recently acquired 111B safe so I can give it some use. A few questions: The lead washer for the NRV is still in the tube. I read comments that they are reusable. If I reinstall the NRV after replacing the pip, will the washer provide a good seal or should I just replace it? If reuse OK, should I try to pull out and flip over or just leave in place? Is there a source for the original-style pip that fits inside the spring or should I just use the kind with the brass holder? I’ve searched a lot on the internet for them but no luck. Maybe I’m not using the correct search terms. Thanks! - Steve
Sometimes you can be lucky but I tend to update my NRV gaskets to HDPE plastic (I just those plastic off-white catsup and mustard bottles and punch them out). That rubber pip is not a good one in my opinion. The one with the brass holder is way better. Nothing wrong with that one but very hard to find. Here is a good set to replace it. These are great stoves...I really like mine. Optimus No:111 & 22 Service Kit - The Fettlebox
Thanks for the info. I am familiar with the Fettlebox. I saw several other mentions elsewhere of using the food containers for making the washer. I think I have an extra brass holder with pip on hand from a prior order for some Svea 123 stoves I fettled. I’ll make up a washer and see how it goes.
Its for me preventative maintenance regarding the plastic gasket. Every stove I have that uses an NRV gets one. Never had a problem with any of them, and later on when I take it out for inspection before a trip it comes out easy. The lead ones seem to seize up a little and always afraid to break the head off an NRV. If you dont have a cup for the pip lemme know I am in the US....I can dig one up.
The old lead washer is a very good option. Unless torn, they can be reused again and again. The 'bad' option is the one where no washer is used. The metal to metal seal will work, but it has a greater tendency to be much more difficult to remove later.
Remus1956, thanks for the offer. Very kind of you! I was able to locate a new pip w/ holder in my spare parts box I bought a few years back from The Fettlebox. There was also 2 new lead washers in there so that’s what I’ll use. Got the old one out. Not torn but not pretty, either.
No problem. Put some fuel in it and pump it up. Then tilt it over so you can see if fuel gets into the pump tube. Give it 5 minutes... If no fuel then you're good to go
