Hi I got this out tonight for the first time. I noticed, however, it was in a box with a Primus decal - was this typical or is it a mix. The stove lit but didn't burn very well so decided to give it a service. I am the new boy so stripping things down helps me learn more about them. It says on the label "for Gasoline". Will the jet be special or anyone will do? I was surprised to find a wick in the tank, but there again I am the novice. Do wicks need to be replaced? Any advice appreciated.
G'day @magpiestovie This post explains the relationship between Primus and Optimus during the 1960's. https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/data-on-ptc-optimus-80s-pimus-71ls.17833/ I had a quick re read and I think you have a mix? Not sure about the nipple / jet but these are a gasoline only stove. This post is a 123 but the rebuild process is the same so should help. https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/svea-123-disassembly.33679/ Pull the wick out and if it is discoloured replace it. Use a pure cotton, no synthetic as this will melt.
Hi @magpiestovie , the nipple is the same as used in the common N°5 and similar stoves (roarer or silent). At some point these came with the smaller .23 sized ones but other than a slightly weaker flame there is no advantage over using the .32 sized ones. I have replaced several in the Primus N°71 stoves I have and in a Svea 123 burner, all working fine. Best regards, Wim
Magpie WELCOME !, I'll cover 1 question re a Primus label. This peculiarity is covered maybe multiple times on CCS but image below (from complete original OP 80) is further confirmation that for whatever reason there are many examples that Optimus workers, with their Primus 71 tin in-hand, placed a larger Optimus label over top of smaller Primus label for Optimus 80 packaging. thx omc
Just went and had another look at the tin. There is a definite outline on the top where another label could have been placed over the Primus sign. Well spotted, thanks again.
Thanks, but re the well spotted and tidbit below the credit goes to the many members that were engaged researching many camp stove topics 10 to 15 years ago. I do want to add relevant content but, I am new too , relatively speaking. So much of this is new to you, if it's interesting, another tidbit re your 80: For sake of discussion let's say your OP 80 came off assembly line c1971. FYI, if you place side by side a Primus 71 and Op 80 made nearest the same time, say c1971. and remove all of the labeling down to brass on the stove and remove label from tin. The 2 are the exact same stove and tin. Completely, exactly the same stove and tin. thx omc
