    I recently acquired this Optimus 8R that has not been used. It does have external rusting from sitting in a shed for many years:

    I will treat the bottom of the tin to inhibit the rust.That's all I'll do to this stove. I will keep it unfired.

    In getting ready to take these photographs, I discovered that these little buggers have been breeding in the dark:

    From bottom to top: two Taiwanese clones; an Optimus 8R; a Primus 8R; and the Optimus 8R above.

    Always good to have spare stoves to turn to ...

    I've a 111 that's also taken a bash on the front middle of the fuel tank from the closure cap for the hinged-down front. Similar horizontal indentation. That's not to detract from it being a beaut of an example.

    @presscall,

    I looked at that little ding to see whether it was recent, but it seems to be of the same vintage as the rest of the stove - part of its "character". I will now get my other Optimus 8R fettled and use it!

    Cheers

    I have an unfired 1954 71E. I had to buy another to quench the desire to fire it.

    How do you treat to inhibit against rust?

    @Billyboy

    To inhibit rust in this case, where I want to keep the stove as unused/unfettled, I have rubbed (the bottom only) gently with 000 steel wool to take off loose rust (not paint); wiped immediately with absolute alcohol; then immediately polished with car wax.

    On big rust jobs where I want to repaint, I'll either use a rust converter or electrolysis, neither of which are suitable for this stove.

    Cheers

    Hi Tony,

    Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have a quick question: A buddy of mine just acquired an 8R with the same "sticker and stamping" and knob that yours has in your original post.

    Any idea on the date range of that unit?

    Thank you, sir.

    Vincent.

    The key features for dating are the embossed case; the tank lid and the control wheel. Together they make mine an early 8R, so I'd say the 1960s - but I'm not an expert and happy to be contradicted.

    I'll dig through some posts on dating these things and see if I can nail a better date.
