Hello. I bought the Optimus Nova and used it one time, it worked fine and I used it to cook something.

Then the next day I tried to fire it up again and no amount of pre-heating would get the flame to turn blue etc. It just shoots a pillar of gasoline into the sky, one straight line (not a mist). I tried all the troubleshooting things in the manual such as cleaning the nozzle, proper pre-heating, etc.

I am pretty sure the fuel bottle is building pressure because there is resistance after 20-30 pumps. I have only used gasoline in it and nothing else.

    Welcome.

I would first ask about how you are preheating.
And, if you are opening the valve slowly, or quickly?

    You have bottle pressure.
You have a clear jet. (Did you use the magnet to toggle the pricker?)

    Double check the fuel.. ?

    Photos always help.

    Ken

(Edit: I missed the part of spraying into the sky. As said below, is there a flame plate?)

Also check that the burner plate (top plate / flame spreader) is in place. If fuel really shots into the sky, then it sounds as if this part is missing.

Yes that part was missing on arrival. I thought that was odd when looking at the manual.

To preheat it I am letting some gasoline out, turning it off, lighting the escaped gasoline, and once it is almost out, slowly turning it on again. But this just either puts out the flame, or creates a large yellow flame pillar into the heavens.

But I am unsure what you mean to check the fuel? It is gasoline I bought from the gas station 3 or 4 days ago, theres nothing else in it.

You need a flame plate. A requirement.
Good of @Staffan Rönn to note the key word "sky".

After that, what you are doing should work. The flame, when spread properly by the plate, will heat the fins and properly vaporize the fuel.

Gasoline from the gas station usually has additives that are not recommended.
A Norwegian might advise better fuels to use in your area.
If you fix the above problem, the stove should work even on auto fuel.

In any event, your stove will not work without the burner plate. This part is critical to the function. Maybe it just fell off in the stuff bag or so?

Ken beat me to the reply :content:

Is it possible that it would work without that part? If not, maybe it is worth that I go back to the place I used it first, to find the piece :?

You were totally right. I made a makeshift plate out of a can top and it works now. Thank you.

The function of the burner plate is critical. Without it you will continue to "shoot for the stars". I know of users that have made plates from scrap metal in emergency situations. Also people who have used the handle end of the multitool (that comes with the stove) as a burner plate.

That's because you didn't upload a picture. You are using a third party image hosting (Imgur).

The Nova spare parts kit contains a flame plate.
