I have a Touring Turm spirit stove that is in reasonably good condition, apart from its pre-heat tray. I’m cleaning it up as best I can and wondering how best to treat it. I have VHT paint to hand, but I’m not sure it’s the best option. Would something like engine enamel be a better bet? It looks like it might be closer to what was originally used, but I’m not sure if it will stand up to the temperatures involved. -R
The engine enamel would likely be fine for occasional use, but with any proper cooking with big pans there will be quite a lot of reflected heat and a good quality VHT might be a safer bet.
I ended up splashing out on a can of black enamel that claims to be good up to 250C. The first 3 uses have gone okay, I’ll see how it goes. -R
Looks great. Something I've noticed over the years is that good quality engine paints/enamels are superior to most 'high temperature' paints due to better pigments and solids content. As long as the temperature is below what the paint can cope with, it should give decent protection.
