I was lucky to find this pre 1911 Primus 230 on ebay last year for less then 100.USD.Not sure why it went so cheap.
Only thing wrong with it was a missing reserve cap boss and the box had been painted.

This photo shows the old green paint on the box and a post fettle light up.Not sure why the flame was violet.

With the paint removed it still had much of the shine.
This came with the reserve cap but no boss.
The bottle is not original. It's an Omnipaque bottle I get from my work place.

Outside of box showed the green color these boxes get after so many years.

Nice brass shield. These boxes are just so cool.Without them these stoves would never last this long still with all or most of the parts.

The trick to removing the paint on these is to not remove the green/grey patina on the outside.
Highly polished brass is not easy to photograph
because you get as much sky as you do stove.

I am hoping to find a donor Optimus 00 or a 210 so I can cut off the threaded part and solder a reserve boss on this.

    Lovely acquisition Doug.

The metal box has nicely rounded corners, which I've not encountered before.

I interpret what you've said about the paint finish that you've retained the paint on the outside but have stripped what remained on the inside.

    Hello George,
I have an early bun foot Patent Optimus 00 and a later Optimus 00 as shown in these photos along with the Primus 230. The three reserve caps are interchangeable.

Both of these boxes on the right came with paint on them when I bought them.

And yes your right the original boss on the Primus 230 was solid like the bun foot patent 00
but I'm not sure how to find one like that. I thought I'd just look for a male riser from a scrap 00 tank and saw it off.

    Hello John,
John these are before and after the paint remover.Maybe the outside patina was there before the paint went on to prevent and further rusting.

I believe the square box was like this one from the gallery.

Maybe this was marketed in other locations then the UK were the rectangular "outfits" were from.
Mine was from a seller in the US.

Yeah, beautiful stove. Even with the reserve boss gone, it's a fantastic stove.

I got a spare part from a Optimus 00 George had in his spares bin.

It worked out fine. The cap has a place to sleep now where it belongs and not rolling around in the box.

Thank you George for the spare part.
