It would seem that 1947 was the year the 503 lost the rather nice fuel gauge that features on Anders' lovely 1946 503 here Primus No:503 * However I'm not complaining as this stove is a very welcome addition to my collection and as a bonus it required minimal fettling to get it running. Just the usual checks to the NRV, unusual SRV, the jet and a new fuel cap washer. Whilst the jet was out for cleaning I inspected the needle and luckily it looked fine. I didn't fancy trying to get the needle back in with the restricted room. I don't own tool No 1538 - but I'd very much like to. I think, other than a minimal clean to the dull nickel finish, this one can stay as is. I don't wish to do a respray. Looking at the Primus catalogues of the period I think this the 503/2 model with chromed tank, a 4155 burner and a dull nickel finish. It arrived with a few additions, a useful homemade travelling box, an old jet, the instructions and a box of chet wax matches (long burning and unbreakable) from South Africa! Well, made there at least.
Good morning @Robert Radcliffe, beautiful single burner range stove the Primus 503 is, a brilliant addition to your collection. I love the nickel plated i just wish i had one in my collection, which is on my bucket hope fully at a good price, well done Robert on a great score
@mr optimus I was beginning to think there was little love for the 503 with all three featured having over 9000 views between them but a total of only 3 comments, four now. I'm glad it's one you clearly like though. I was very excited to come across this one. Condition is fine for me, a stove that's clearly been well used. Rob.
